DO NOW – 5 th period V: 0 Monday 11/9 On your post-it note, answer the following question. Use the sentence stem to answer in a complete sentence. What 2 things do you need know in order to calculate speed? You need to know an object’s _______________ and __________________ in order to calculate speed.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How do we calculate and communicate the change in position, direction, and speed for moving objects? DAILY OBJECTIVES: Students will calculate speed to show the relationship between distance and time.

Agenda Today’s Agenda - Bubble Gum Physics - Bubble Gum Trivia Exit Ticket Homework NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK!

Bubble Gum Physics Task: Calculate your “chomping” speed using the unit chomps/second. Materials: gum, calculator, stop watch 1.You are working in partners. 2.Each person will receive a piece of gum. Take turns calculating your # of chomps and your chomp speed. 3.Answer conclusion questions when done with trials. 4.You must throw away your gum before you leave! SPEED = CHOMPS/TIME

Test your bubble gum knowledge: Complete the 10 question Bubble Gum Trivia Challenge. Bubble Gum Trivia - Exit Ticket V: 0

DO NOW V: 0 Tuesday 11/10 Draw the following graph on your dry erase board. What type of motion does this graph represent? distance time

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How do we calculate and communicate the change in position, direction, and speed for moving objects? DAILY OBJECTIVES: Students will calculate the speed for various modes of transportation. Students will review the physics’ concepts: force, motion, speed, and graphs.

Agenda Today’s Agenda - Speed Machines Handout - Jeopardy: Physics Review Homework No HW this week!

Speed Machines – Calculating Speed Task: Calculate the speeds of the fastest vehicles on Earth.

DO NOW V: 0 Thursday 11/12 Copy the 3 graphs below on to your DO NOW handout. Below each graph, label it as: Speeding Up, At Rest, Constant Speed Replace the word “displacement” with the word “distance.”

TEKS 8.(6)(A) demonstrate and calculate how unbalanced forces change the speed or direction of an object's motion; 6.8(D) measure and graph changes in motion;

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How do we calculate and communicate the change in position, direction, and speed for moving objects? DAILY OBJECTIVES: Students will practice constructing graphs showing speed and calculate the speed of moving objects.

V: 0 HomeworkNo HW this week! Today’s Agenda -3 rd 6 weeks – Procedures Review -Speed Practice Handout -Dry Erase Board practice

Procedures Review Let’s review the following: 1.Tutoring 2.Absences 3.Missing work and Late work 4.Tardies 5.Bathroom Passes 6.Do Nows 7.Excessive Talking = Detention 8.Extra Credit 9.Grade Update Handout

TUTORING 8 th grade Science Tutoring MONDAY – WETZEL TUESDAY – HIBBARD WEDNESDAY – GAFFNEY MONDAY-THURDAY: Homework Club in the LMR!

TUTORING Why come to tutoring? 1.Failed a test or quiz 2.Absent 3.Missing Work 4.Do not understand a concept 5.Need a quiet place to study

ABSENT IF YOU ARE ABSENT, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COME TO TUTORING WITHIN 1-3 DAYS OF BEING ABSENT TO MAKE UP MISSED WORK AND TO GET YOUR NOTEBOOK CAUGHT UP! What do I do if I’m absent? 1.Check the blue “missing work” box. 2. Ask a friend. 3. Go to tutoring. 4. Go to the science website. www.ohenryscience8.weebly.com

HOMEWORK Homework is assigned every Monday and due every Friday! 1 day late: -10 pts 2 days late: - 20 pts 3 days late: - 30 pts 4-5 days late: -50 pts After that, it is a 0%. Students who do their HW make better grades on tests and quizzes than those who do not.

EXCESSIVE TALKING You will receive a detention if you are consistently talking out of turn!

Graph the real world scenarios on the whiteboards. Ms. Gaffney is riding her bike to school. She leaves her house and goes 5 kilometers in 5 minutes at a constant speed. She then rides the next 10 kilometers to school in 15 minutes at a constant speed. Real World Scenarios V: 0

Graph the real world scenarios on the whiteboards. Marcos is quickly walking his dogs and they go 2 kilometers in 15 minutes. They then sit in the park and take a break for 15 minutes. They are feeling pretty good, so they decide to go for a run. They run 8 kilometers in 30 minutes. Real World Scenarios V: 0

Lucy has a bought a new motorcycle and is going on a long trip from her house to her mother’s house which is 400 miles away. She rides 50 miles in 2.5 hours (bad traffic), then travels 50 more miles in 2 hrs (still in traffic). She travels the next 50 miles in 1.5 hrs (traffic getting better), and travels the last 50 miles in 1 hour. (no traffic ) Real World Scenarios V: 0

DO NOW V: 0 Friday 11/13 On your DO NOW handout, write a scenario that describes the motion of the car. CAR SPEED

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How do we calculate and communicate the change in position, direction, and speed for moving objects? DAILY OBJECTIVES: Students will calculate average speed.

Agenda Today’s Agenda -Speed Practice Packet -Bill Nye “Motion” Video and Worksheet Homework No HW this week!

Force & Motion Bill Nye - Motion Video Complete the video worksheet as you watch the video.
