WS Training Limited Staff Development – The use of active learning resources and improved results in Application of Number Tests

Where we started Keyskills requirements Assessor resources and teaching methods Problems encountered Exam results and measurements

Keyskills requirements Application of Number Level 2 has 2 elements – a project and an online test. In order for us to claim a full framework, the learner must complete both to the required standard. It is our responsibility to give the learner as much support as we can to help them achieve this

Assessor resources and teaching methods The only resources we officially had were the EDI workbooks (sample attached) and the www.keyskills4u.com website www.keyskills4u.com Each Assessor used different methods and had different resources, but these were not being shared efficiently No additional support measures were in place

Problems encountered Learners were only being identified as having a maths training need AFTER they had failed the exam Our overall exam results were poor Little mathematical support measures in place for the Assessors – I felt that I had a training need before I could address my learners needs

Exam results and Measurements

What we did Attended a seminar on active learning resources run by the NCETM From this came a new knowledge of all the resources out there and realisation that we are not alone! This led on to the concept of Maths coaching days

From that seminar I learnt that research has shown that students remember:- 5%by listening only 10%by reading only 20%using audio and visual techniques 30%from a demonstration 50%from discussion groups 75%by doing it themselves 90%students telling each other

Principles for Effective Learning Build on learners existing knowledge Expose and discuss common misconceptions Develop effective questioning Use co-operative small group work Emphasise methods rather than answers Use rich collaborative tasks Create connections between maths topics Use Technology in appropriate ways

We took these principles and developed the following:- Session plans Shared resources Hard copy folders in each office Assessor awareness sessions Formal maths coaching days Support from qualified mathematicians

What have we done? Session Plans for each of the disciplines Ratio Probability Statistics Units of Measure Decimals Fractions Perimeter and Area Money/time/distance/temperature Understanding Number and calculations Percentages Formula Volume

The session plans are now available on the G: Drive G:\Vocational Learning Department\APPRENTICESHIPS A-Z\Keyskills\Maths Coaching Days\Session plans

There is also a hard copy folder in the Ipswich office, which will be rolled out to Bury and Haverhill for all Assessors to use. Each Session Plan contains information on the best resources available, where to find them and how to use them.

The coaching days have been totally revamped and include:- Mathematical ice breakers Inclusive group activities Mathematical Games Differentiation Maths4life yellow folder BBC Bitesize Standards unit

We need more learners to attend! The dates coming up are:- These are all currently in Ipswich but we will move them around to suit demand. The session plans are also designed to be mobile so we can take the teaching sessions into the workplace. July 22nd September 23rd October 22nd November 20th

Resources We tried out many resources and used the best ones in our session plans We had help from Susan Wall We trawled the internet and attended further seminars and begged, borrowed and stole everything we liked! We now have a rich and diverse selection available to all Assessors

Staff Development Some Assessors have attended the maths coaching days and 2 have passed the AON2 themselves, giving them the confidence to pass their knowledge on to learners Awareness of the exam results has been raised We have addressed specific issues raised by assessors in their feedback (see attached)

Exam results have improved dramatically

Other Outcomes Positive feedback from learners Positive feedback from Assessors Positive feedback from Managers Improvement in the performance scorecard

Any Questions? Thank you for attending our workshop
