K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 Science and Engineering Practices Same Name Different Focus Jody Sherriff Rita Starnes

Session Goals K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 Clarify the science and engineering practices in the NGSS and how each practice has a different focus for each field. develop an engineering project for a specific grade level.

What is Technology? K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 Anything human-made that is used to solve a problem or fulfill a desire. Technology can be an object, a system, or a process.

Present Thinking K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 What is the difference between the work of scientists and the work of engineers? Make a chart

The Big Idea K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 If the goal is to answer a question, then students are doing science. If the goal is to define and solve a problem, then students are doing engineering. Appendix F

Science and Engineering Practices K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 Students cannot fully understand scientific and engineering ideas without engaging in the practices of inquiry and the discourses by which such ideas are developed and refined. Appendix F

Reading K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 How Engineering and Science Differ Framework pgs. 46-48 Highlight any important differences that you would like to add to your chart and add to chart.

Researching the Practices K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 Science PracticeEngineering Purpose/focus Examples

Reflecting on Practices K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 Framework pages 78-79 Highlight golden lines

Debrief K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 What is the purpose for thinking about the Science Practices and Engineering Practices together in one chart? As a teacher what do we need to think about when teaching a specific content using a specific practice? ( Example: predator prey science content and analyzing data related to resources and competition. What data would be relevant to analyze? What resources?)

Develop an Engineering Project K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 Review the engineering performance expectations at a grade span and choose one: a.Determine a project that could be done to meet the standard? b. What practices can be used for the project? c. Develop prompts that could be used for each practice. d. What is the science that is needed for students to do the engineering project? e. What grade level content is appropriate for the project?

Make a Bumper Sticker K-12 Alliance/WestEd 1/14 Make two bumper stickers, One for science One for engineering Clarify how the the focus of the practice is different for science and for engineering.
