7 You're a professional - Training Initially Continuously Learn from mistakes – Observe, experience, apply – Exude confidence, motivate with confidence – Set and meet a goal – Develop multiple competencies – Utilize supervisors, mentors, and colleagues Find your own “M”, “Q”, or Felix

10 (003) Mission preparedness Bond prepares for missions – He reads his briefs – Consults w/experts – He observes But... – He's also prepared to improvise – Trusts instincts – He can be a “blunt object”

11 You’re prepared You prepare for each appointment – Read the student records – Consult with colleagues – Set an agenda/goal to get what you want from the meeting – Observe and listen, pay attention to details – But, prepare to improvise. Be ready to adjust and be flexible based on student's input, you'll need to be ready with parallel plans and alternatives. A good advisor.....

14 Q branches Bond has a bit of tech help on every mission Use your tech - student records - to prepare, to make notes, to better communicate It often comes down to experience, human ingenuity, and resilience Don’t let the tech overwhelm or substitute for face-2-face contact

15 (005) Know your allies Bond always has an ally - whether it is his old CIA colleague Felix, a fellow agent, the Bond "girl" Your allies are advisors, other student affairs folks - careers, counseling center Know when and where to refer Remember though, at the end of the day, it’s Bond who completes the mission

18 (007) Society changes Bond has had to adapt and change with times – Sexism, misogyny – Geopolitics – Social anxieties – Public health Smoking, AIDS, Drinking You have to be up to date You have to be flexible

19 Bond is culturally aware (?) Surprisingly, yes Strives to have an understanding and insight into local culture Eats the food, drinks the drinks, romances the women

20 (008)Finish the mission Bond usually acts in a sense of duty, loyalty, and honor You act out for a sense of duty and loyalty to your student Learn and grow from the mission (advising is a continuous improvement profession) Each mission should focus on your core skill and give you opportunity to grow others
