The Book of Proverbs Chapter 3 Prov 3:11-12 Doctrine of Divine Discipline. Heb 12:5-11; Rev 3:19

A. D.d. is the sum total of punitive action taken by the justice of God in grace to correct, punish, encourage, train, and motivate the believer’s free will toward the Plan of God.

There are three potential stages of D.d. as noted in: 1 Cor 11:30, “Some are weak and sick and a number sleep.”

It also includes the law of volitional responsibility with its self ‑ imposed, induced, and indulged forms of misery. The principle of, “you reap what you sow,” Gal 6:7-8; Cf. Prov 22:8.

B. The Purpose for Divine Discipline.

A two fold purpose in Rev 3:19. To “reprove” and “discipline” the wayward son.

a. “Reprove” - ELEGCHO, “to expose, prove guilty, convict, condemn, reprove or rebuke.”

It is designed to expose the sin, human good or evil the child of God is entering into and its destructive behavior and consequences.

It is best to be exposed to these so that you can recognize them, Rebound (1 John 1:9), and make the appropriate corrections or adjustments in your life (repent).

b. “Discipline” - PAIDEUO, “to train children, to chasten, correct, to instruct, teach, discipline; whip, scourge, or beat.” There is a learning component and a punishment component.

It means to train up a child, which includes educating them about their wrong thoughts and actions.

It is a warning that the believer is out of bounds and not executing God’s plan, functioning instead inside of Satan’s Cosmic System.

You can learn by humility, applying God’s Word in faith, or from D.d., to (1 John 1:9) and recover from sin, carnality or reversionism.

Only then are we serving and glorifying God, as we continue our momentum in the spiritual life.

C. Triple ‑ Compound Divine Discipline. It begins when you get involved in sins of the tongue against someone, as motivated by your mental attitude sins.

Mat 7:1 ‑ 2, “Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.”

The compounding of discipline comes by being disciplined for each category of sin you are committing:

1. The verbal sin.

1. The verbal sin. 2. The mental attitude sin.

1. The verbal sin. 2. The mental attitude sin. 3. Every thing you say about someone else, whether true or not, and the consequences they should receive for their actions, is put on you.

D. Recovery from Divine Discipline.

1. When the believer recovers, the suffering is changed from discipline to blessing, and one of three things can occur.

a. The removal of all disciplinary suffering.

b. Discipline suffering is diminished, but is now designed for blessing. 1 Cor 10:13

1 Cor 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”

c. Disciplinary suffering continues at the same intensity, but is now designed for blessing, because you can bear it. Job 5:17 ‑ 18

Heb 12:11, “All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.”

Grace Offering Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure— pressed down, shaken together, and running over.”
