2 Things to look for in Document Questions Before reading the document, read the question(s) to understand its focus. When reading the document, highlight or underline key words that relate to the question(s). Make notes that have to do with the question. Consider the author and the time when the document was written. Identify the author’s point of view and purpose.

3 Look at the text on P.20 What aboriginal group is this speaker talking about? What is the name for the kind of dwelling that is being described? What does this document tell us about this society’s social organization? Give examples from the text. In this excerpt, do you think Cartier fully understands the relationship between men and women in this society? Give an example.

4 Document Questions: Pictures Read the questions(s) to determine what to look for in the visual. Consider the purpose or motivation of the person who created the visual. Ask how the visual conveys its creators concepts and whether it has an emotional impact. Apply your observations to the question(s).

5 Turn to p. 6 (classroom picture) What subject do you think is being taught in this class? Point to examples in the picture. Describe the makeup of the students in the classroom. Point to examples in the picture. What might be a reason that these people are taking this class? How does this classroom scene connect to Quebec’s population growth? What does this picture say about the Quebec’s government stance on language and culture? Give details and examples.
