3 + Work on Writing: Things to Know Students work individually or with a partner. It is a continuation of writing workshop. Students get to choose what they wish to write about. Importance of writing: We become better readers and writers. We care about writing and the people who read it. Choice. It is fun! Works on the fluency of writing.

4 + Work on Writing: Sample I-Chart Write the whole time. Stay in one spot. Work quietly. Choice of what to write. Get started quickly. Underline words we’re not sure how to spell and move on. Work with students. StudentsTeacher

5 + Work on Writing: Focus Lessons Day 1 Model what to do when they can’t spell a word. Brainstorm I-Chart Day 3 What to write about… List of topics List of forms Post lists Day 2 Brainstorm and practice where to sit. Brainstorm and practice what materials to use during writing. Day 4 Continue to teach forms and traits of writing as per district curriculum

6 + Word Work: Things to Know Focus on spelling and vocabulary. Daily 5 authors do not advocate one certain way to do this. It is whatever your preferred method. Much of this component involves teaching procedures about how to use and clean up materials. Importance of Word Work: It helps us become better readers, writers, and spellers. We care about our writing and the people who will read it. It is fun!

7 + Word Work: Sample Materials Set up I-Chart One person takes out materials of his or her choice and sets up in a quiet location. Stay in one spot until it is time to return materials. Work the whole time. Try your best. Work on stamina. Work quietly. Get started quickly. Work with students. StudentsTeacher

8 + Word Work Materials In the first days let the students have ample time to explore and play with the materials. Whiteboards Magnetic Letters Wikki Stix Clay Letter Stamps Colored markers Materials can include any that you find useful and effective for word study.

9 + Word Work: Materials Clean Up I- Chart Everyone using materials helps put those materials away. Materials go back in the original tub. Return materials to the same spot. Leave the materials neat. Clean quietly. Get started on your new task quickly. Work with students StudentsTeacher

10 + Word Work: Focus Lessons Day 1 Introduce materials and locations. Brainstorm I-Chart for set up. Model finding materials, placement, and set up. Brainstorm I-Chart for clean up. Day 2 Model and practice finding materials, placement, and set up. Brainstorm I-Chart: How to Use Materials Model and practice how to use materials. Continue building stamina, a few minutes each day.

11 + Other Optional Focus Lessons Word sorts Adding words to their “Collections.” Add words to word study notebooks based on weekly strategy: like blends, long vowels, etc. Practicing commonly misspelled words. Open word sort and writing in notebook. Closed sort and writing in notebook. List words that belong in a pattern. Setting up the word study notebook.
