EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Preparatory Lecture Effects of Environment on performance

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Today General comments and instructions –Information –Procedure –Results –Questions –Discussion Group time to make decisions

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance General comments Aim of labs- apply theory to practice Use of voice- –how (projection, tone etc) and –what you say Explanations- make clear Instructions- Be direct Participants- identify beforehand, ensure ready Rest of the class- must be actively involved

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Report Needs to be submitted before you start presenting Should be more detailed than powerpoint Needs in text referencing Details in lab manual

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Information Explain things differently!!! Discuss concepts rather than give the answers How is body temperature regulated? Adaptations to heat Four methods Humidity

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Your Lab- Aims Investigate the bodies response to sub- maximal exercise in three different environments:

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Your lab-procedure a) The same participant performs the same activity under all three thermal conditions; b) Three different students of equal training status in each of the thermal conditions c) 1 male and 1 female of equal training status perform the same activity under all three thermal conditions;

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Equipment Heaters 2 treadmills 2 exercise bikes Tv/DVD HR monitors Stopwatches

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Preparation Participants- Try to get them all the same in terms of food status and clothing. Also should be well hydrated beforehand. All subjects are asked to adhere to the following pre-test instructions: 1) Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing: shorts and t shirt only 2) Drink plenty of fluids over the 24-hour period preceding the test 3) Avoid food, tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine for 2 hours prior to taking the test 4) Avoid exercise or strenuous physical activity the day of the test; and 5) Get an adequate amount of sleep (6 to 8 hours) the night before the test

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Procedure Get pre test information Warm up Start test Doesn’t have to be 30 minutes Don’t give liquids during test

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Results Results table –Not measuring BP- cross out –Thermal sensation and comfort –Observations of short term adaptation to exercise in environment Will be available on my computer  WebCT

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Discussion Overview- what happened today??? Go through tests in different rooms as they won’t have a good idea of what happened What was found? Graph, look for relationships

EDU2EXP Exercise & Performance Questions- to be done in class time 1- Graph and relationships 2- Change to core temp?? Why? why not? 3- Adaptations to heat and cold- step through what would have happened in the body 4-Conclusion
