16 Periodic Trends Ms. Barkume 12/6 Periodic Trends aka Periodicity Reminder = Describe how atomic radius changes on the PT. Example On the periodic table Columns = groups/families Rows = periods Atomic radius = a measure of the size of an atom Increases down a group because number of energy levels increases. Decreases across a period because the positive charge of the nucleus increases, pulling the negative electrons closer to nucleus making the atom smaller. Cs is bigger than Na = in a group/family Na is bigger than F = in a period

17 Periodic Trends Ms. Barkume 12/6 Periodic Trends aka Periodicity Summarize how Ionization Energy changes acorss the PT. Example Ionization Energy = the energy required to remove an electron from the valence shell. (A measure of whether the atom will form a (+) cation.) I.E. decreases down a family because atom gets bigger, so it is easier to remove an outer electron I.E. increases across a period because the more (+) nucleus pulls on the electron more (also, think that atoms want to have 8 valence e -, therefore atoms with 7 valence e - probably won’t give an electron up. Fluorine has the highest ionization energy.

Example Electronegativity = the ability of an atom to attract an electron (A measure of whether an atom will form a neg. anion). Electronegativity decreases as you move down a group because the atom gets bigger so (+) nucleus is less likely to pull on the (-) electrons. Electronegativity increases as you move across a period because the greater (+) nucleus pulls more on electrons (also, think the closer atom is to having 8 valence e -, the higher electronegative. Fluorine is the most electronegative element.
