2 What is an MPortfolio? “MPortfolio enhances student learning; reveals the many ways in which Michigan students, faculty, and staff contribute to the public good; and encourages students to create powerful connections between their experiences inside and outside of the classroom.” Mportfolio Website Gallery of Projects Resources Pilot program Trying to get students to reflect on co-curricular experiences outside of classroom

3 What is it good for? Helping you to identify learning from all areas of your life, bridge your college experiences to other life experiences, and demonstrate how your underlying values and beliefs connect to your learning Develop your ability to recognize “a-ha” moments in your life Having a resource/portfolio to take with you after you graduate Fostering reflective practice, ethical leadership, and life-long learning within students

4 Why should you have one? Employers and Grad Schools love them Organize your own thinking Show a portrait of yourself that’s much more unique than a resume

6 Principles of Integrative Learning Intentional learning – conscious and active development of one’s learning Integrative learning – the ability to connect and apply fragmented pieces of information, knowledge, and skills Intentional and integrative learners are: Self-determined and self-directed Critical and curious Connective Reflective Have a systems perspective (influence of context and culture) Can assemble a tool box for a specific problem

7 Arts at Michigan Pilot? E-Portfolios have been around for a long time UM - primarily class endeavors DSA/Academic Opportunity to capture extra- and co-curricular learning The Michigan Difference

8 Arts at Michigan Pilot 2 nd full year of the Arts Ambassador program Primarily a leadership program Use the Arts Ambassadors program as a springboard for students Good thing to set up in your first or second year Piloting the process How long does it take? What works in the co-curricular context? How can we incorporate it into our work with Ambassadors?

9 Process Pre-Test, Post Test Measuring your learning over time Multidimensional approach to measure aspects of personal development In Meeting Exercises/Out-of-Meeting Writing Generative Interviews Peer Feedback Outcome – Having an Mportfolio with at least three developed “artifacts” Final Presentations (video)

10 Expectations Approx. 20 hours over the semester (won’t need much more) Meeting Attendance (12 hours) 8-10 hours outside meetings Log hours Check website page for schedule and updates Pre-Test and Post test Program Evaluation Payment Schedule – biweekly for 8 weeks $30 per pay period/final adjustments at the end.

11 Schedule of Work Meeting 2/19 or 2/20 Project overview, activities Meeting 3/12 or 3/13 Report on short-term and long-term goals, activities Meeting (week of 3/22) Generative interviews Meeting 3/26 or 3/27 Website tutorial, Present 2 nd draft writing, work on drafts, begin work on philosophy statement Meeting 4/2 or 4/3 Work on philosophy statement, design/layout exercises Meeting 4/16 or 4/17 Final tune-ups and uploads, present e-portfolios to group, final group feedback, post-tests You may always attend one or the other meeting, but…

12 Activity One Reflecting on Key Learning Experiences (45 minutes) Choose three areas to develop Answer the Questions What was the context of the experience? Time, place, position, relationships to others Why it was important Knowledge, skills, insights gained or strengthened A-ha! Moments Top learning experiences The importance of the experience at the time – how did it change you? How is the learning reflected in your life now?

13 Activity Two Identifying Categories for Work Showcase (45 minutes) Complete worksheet (see example) A single learning experience can connect to different categories. Creating an Outline for Examples of Work Creating Titles What knowledge/skill categories do you do you see repeated across your experiences? What categories best capture your work and why? Are there any Categories you don’t see that you think should be here?
