2 Boycotts in Montgomery Schools had been integrated, but segregation still ruled in the South –Segregation was still seen in restaurants, buses, drinking foutains, waiting rooms, and many other places. –The efforts of two individuals would change this forever

3 Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refuses to move –Montgomery chapter of NAACP takes action –One day bus boycott planned 90 % of African Americans that usually rode buses did not that day, inspired by the phrase “People, don’t ride the bus today. Don’t ride it, for freedom”

5 Young Minister becomes leader Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) chose 26 year old MLK, Jr. to lead Bus Boycott –Elaborate carpool system put in place –Protestors fired from jobs or attacked/bombed –Nov 1956 bus segregation declared unconstitutional. Boycott was 381 days long

6 Martin Luther King, Jr. Pastor from Dexter Avenue Baptist Church –Originally from Atlanta, moved after receiving doctorate in theology from Boston U. 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner for promoting nonviolence Assassinated 1968 in Memphis, TN

7 I thought schools were integrated??? Some schools refuse to change –Virgil Blossom hopes to postpone by integrating one school –9 Afr. Am students would join the 2,000 caucasion students in Central High in 1957 –Citing public opposition, Gov. Faubus will not support integration National Guard stop students from entering

8 Little Rock Nine return on Sept. 23 with aid from Eisenhower and protection from now federally run Nat. Guard. Insults, rocks, and violence still flew at Nine 8/9 would finish out the year Following year all schools close, no integration until 1959.

10 Collegiate Level James Meredith enrolled at Ole Miss in 1961 –After rejected, NAACP aids his court case –Ross Barnett refuses to allow him –Meredith arrives on campus in secret/ensuing a riot-2 are shot and killed –Kennedy sends protection-Graduates in summer of 1963.
