Educating Academic Advisors in WEB 2.0 Steve Davis-Rosenbaum, Academic Advisor, College of Arts and Sciences, University of KY Patsy Carruthers, Teaching and Academic Support Center (TASC)

Virtual Presentation EST Time: 15 minutes Introduction Collaboration Summer Workshop Outcomes Draft Communication Plan

Definition: WEB 2.0 The term "Web 2.0" (pronounced "Web two point oh") is commonly associated with web applications which facilitate interactive, user-centered design [1 information sharing, interoperability ] and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Examples of Web 2.0 include web-based communities, hosted services, web applications, social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, mashups and folksonomies. A Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content, in contrast to non-interactive websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of information that is provided to them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0

Training the Trainer NACADA Technology Conference, February 2009 Clearwater, FL Focus was to use Web 2.0 and assess it’s use in Advisng students Surveyed Advisors on knowledge and comfort level with Web 2.0 Technologies. Developed a workshop in collaboration with TASC- Teaching Academic Support Center

Partnering with Departments outside of your area TASC and other areas to provide support for workshop development Support with using Blue 2.0 Taught areas of the course that were not familiar to leader Assisted participants via email and Outlook communicator

Advisor WEB 2.0 Workshops What did we cover in course? Course Model– online and inseat Issues of using “Free” WIKI sites and other WEB 2.0 features in an academic environment

The Workshop Seven Advisors volunteered to participate in a seven week workshop Online Web 2.0 workshop was available free on the UK website Syllabus was developed to guide workshop Advisors worked independently on weekly assignments Once a week meetings were held to go over technology, answer questions, share experiences (and product) and discuss applications in Advising.

Final Project http://advisinghub.wetpaint.com/ http://advisinghub.wetpaint.com/ Advisors chose to work with WIKIs for their final project. The goal was to create a WIKI that could be updated monthly and have a FAQ section that would address common questions. Only the HOME page would be modified monthly and duites would be shared by a committee (rather than an individual). Each month would have a theme, list important upcoming events and due dates.

Communication Plan Why develop a Communication Plan Understanding your comfort level with Web 2.0 Availability of training opportunities Choosing the Web 2.0 technologies that are relevant to the goals and mission of the Advisng Center Choosing the Web 2.0 technologies can be supported Before implementing any new technology, we asked: What is the commitment level of the Advising Center to using people and resources in training updating, and keeping information current in maintaining this and or any new technology.

Online Web 2.0 Workshop (What is available to you?) Free online Web 2.0 workshop free online @ BLUE 2.0BLUE 2.0 Only requirement is to give credit to TASC at the University of Kentucky In modules that can be used in any order Sample Syllabus (see handouts or WIKI) Sample Questionnaire to survey colleagues

DRAFT Communication Plan The A&S Communication Plan involves experimentation of new web-based products as they apply to improving and promoting academic advising at the college. The Advising Center will provide training for all advisors on web-based technology approved for use with students. Each new technology will be reviewed by advisors and recommendations will be made to supervisors on the effectiveness and efficiency of the technology within the advising model.

First Goal After review of several WEB 2.0 technologies, it is recommended that an WIKI be developed that would be a monthly forum for important events and news related to advising (an online newsletter). The WIKI would be updated monthly around a theme by a committee of Advisors. Included in the WIKI would be pages that would focus on common issues facing all students, links to the UK Webpage and RSS feeds when available.

Issues of using free WIKI sites for publishing university information Final project: A&S Advising Hub- privacy issues revolving around publishing images, names, movies of students or events without releases Appropriateness of Website advertisements and the lack of control Professionalism of the site when advertisements are present Uploading information, images, etc on public sites- Flickr, Wetpaint, etc Ownership of uploaded material
