6 Improving and protecting health is also essential for social development and poverty reduction. For individuals and families health means the ability of personal development and economic security. At the same time, health is a precondition for the work activity and the basis for intellectual, emotional and physical development. Life expectancy and some other selected health indicators show that the health of the entire population in recent decades has improved, what ranks Slovenia among the developed countries, both in terms of achievements as well as challenges. We noticed that health is improving more among individuals with higher socio- economic status which means that health potential is dependent on socio-economic status. Factors such as education, employment, income, social security and social networks have an impact on lifestyles, risk factors, use of health and other services and, consequently, on morbidity, mortality and life expectancy.
