Assessment of Sternberg’s theory: Significant as we all rely on past experience when solving problems Need to be creative in finding solutions Practical intelligence is important in dealing with real-world situations One weakness is that people with practical intelligence can still struggle to understand their strengths and weaknesses

My Assessment of Goldman’s Theory Emotions can sometimes interfere with decision making and academic performance However, emotional responses can help trigger the appropriate response needed to get out of a bad situation, get help, etc.

My Assessment of Fluid and Crystallized Intelligence Children should be recognized for the crystallized knowledge they have, which is not measured by IQ tests Fluid intelligence can be affected by a person’s ability to focus

Individuals with learning disabilities also at disadvantage For individuals with visual or learning disabilities a verbal-subtest is more accurate Also Verbal subtests work better because many non- verbal subtests require fine-motor tasks to be completed by test taker - meaning better alternative to individuals with motor-skill disabilities (Palmer,D. 2006 pgs.66-68)

Nature and Nurture Factors of Intelligence Nurture factors: Adoption studies children from low income family environments then adopted Into middle or high income families researchers found that their IQ scores and achievement improved from what would have been expected in a disadvantaged home (Healy, J.M. 2010,Pg 211.)

Nurture & Nurture Continued: It has been found that the heritability of IQ in families with lower socioeconomic status is likely to be four times lower in the poorest families compared to families making high incomes Suggesting genetics is higher factor regarding individuals with high socioeconomic status and nurture in families with lower socioeconomic status ( Toga, A. W., Thompson P. M, 2005, pgs. 14-15)

Genetic Influences /Heritability of IQ Genetic influences views differ from behavior and DNA studies viewpoints The behavior studies are influenced by using adoption studies and comparing them with studies done on blood-related families and estimating the variations between individuals with regards to genetic and environmental differences that could vary IQ scores (Deary, 2011, pg 9)

Adoptive studies: Have shown that there is some relationship between IQ’s of children adopted and their adoptive parents and siblings although not as strong of a correlation as in families genetically linked by blood However, these adoptive studies have found that the adoptive families can have major impacts on the child’s IQ scores while living in the home However, Researchers also found child’s IQ scores may actually go up and become similar to biological parents after they leave their adoptive home (Deary, 2011. pgs 199-200)

Identical and Fraternal Twins Identical twins genes are same but, when adopted in different homes environmental factors may cause scores to be different in the short-term and different levels of school achievment and success in long term as a result of different experiences However, Intelligence can be restored to biological when out of adoptive environment On the other hand fraternal twins IQ’s are no more alike than a regular brothers or sisters (Healy, J.M 2010, Pg 211)

Conclusion: Intelligence is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors Everyone has their own learning styles IQ tests can be biased Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses and therefore, needs to use them to succeed in life and in learning
