(1.4)Human Systems - Circulatory System
(p60-61)

Recall – 11 Human Systems

The Circulatory System
The respiratory system carries oxygen to and removes carbon dioxide from the blood. The system that transports these gases between the lungs and the cells is the circulatory system.

The Heart – Figure 1.21 (p60) The heart is the muscular organ that drives the circulatory system. It pumps blood to the cells and then back to the heart. The arrows and numbers on the diagram to the left show the path that the blood takes. Please label your heart diagram now.

The Circulatory System

Blood flow through the body

Blood Vessels There are many different blood vessels in the human body. The main blood vessels are arteries and veins. Capillaries allow gas exchange to occur.

Blood Vessels Arteries are thick-walled, elastic blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart. Veins are thin-walled, inelastic blood vessels. They have valves that keep blood carrying carbon dioxide from backing up as it is carried toward the heart.
