ROBI – Final Presentation The growth of a robot Thomas McDonley University of Florida Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering EEL 5666 Intelligent Machines Design Laboratory

ROBI – What will we talk about Thomas McDonley © 2007 The following topics will be covered: >A recap of design goals and update >Why should we care about a robot family? >A timeline of progress >What still needs to be done

ROBI – Recap and Goals Thomas McDonley © 2007 Recap: ROBI is a term to describe my robots. Robots of Organized Biological Intelligence. The robots will demonstrate biological abilities (sight and speech with limits to what is found in nature). The robots will demonstrate organized expression of biological necessities (Parenting, awareness of self and each other, awareness of predators, and food) Technical Goals: 1)Obstical avoidance 2)Communication 3)Awareness of each other’s position and distance by sight Behavioral Goals: 1) Parent leads the children to a safe area 2) Parent signals children when it’s okay to wander 3) Scold children if they wander too far away 4) Protect children from any human presence 5) Reform a line and lead children to food if anyone is hungry

ROBI – Who cares? Thomas McDonley © 2007 ROBI isn’t just about the novelty of a robot family or making robots act like cute ducks. I designed ROBI as a research platform based on the following observation: >Human intelligence didn’t develop, nor did humans progress, until the invention of a common spoken language. As language has developed so has our universal intelligence. Being able to communicate and being aware of oneself and others is the only way that robots will ever be truly intelligent. Machines of all designs and abilities that can communicate and work together; that is why this isn’t just about ducks.

Robi – The beginning Thomas McDonley © 2007 January 18, 2007

Robi – First Words Thomas McDonley © 2007 January 22, 2007

Robi – First intelligent steps Thomas McDonley © 2007 February 19, 2007 It took almost 1 1/2 months to design and build an obstacle avoiding robot: Prototypical Robi

ROBI – The family Thomas McDonley © 2007 March 22, 2007 It took slightly over 1 month to build the two children robots

ROBI – Communication and Awareness Thomas McDonley © 2007 April 12, 2007 It took 20 days of very long hours to prototype, build, and implement 3 sets of RF links and sight sensors

ROBI – The hair cut Thomas McDonley © 2007 April 15, 2007 It took 3 days for RF system testing and stylish new hair April 16-17, 2007 12 hours have been spent so far testing and perfecting the sight system. A major board re-soldering was needed; I’m very tired =P.

ROBI – Final days till presentation Thomas McDonley © 2007 All Systems have been tested, integrated, and have software written for them. > The following days will be spent (demo day) -Writing a sight IR protocol -Making the robots form and walk in a line -More hair cuts > The next week will be spent (media day) -Making the mother parent the children -Adding a sensor to detect rotunda chairs?
