1 JANUARY 13, 2009 Please Do Now: As we discussed in class, a communicable disease is a condition which can be passed from person to person. A chronic disease is a condition which lasts for a long period of time. In complete sentences, what are three communicable and/or chronic diseases that you would like to know more about? Why do you have an interest in these conditions? Finish time: 7:52 EQ: How can I find research and compose an intelligent research paper? Agenda: – Explanation of iSearch Picture from: http://www.aceshowbiz.com/images/news/000162 86.jpg

2 ISEARCH The iSearch paper is different than a traditional research paper. The iSearch paper requires the writer to research a topic in which they have a specific interest. An iSearch is considered less formal than the traditional research paper because it allows the writer to use I as they write. Picture from: http://www.masterpapers.com/images/loopa.jpg

3 ISEARCH The iSearch paper will require you to explain prior knowledge but will also require you to engage in comprehensive research with regards to your paper. In an effort to help you both organize your paper and to keep your research on topic, you will be required to answer three “burning questions”. You will need to show where you retrieved all of your information from and provide citations in MLA format in an effort to avoid plagiarism. 11 TRANSITIONS Three categories of transition words exist: 1. Chronological order – First, meanwhile, later, afterwards, finally, etc. 2. Objects in relation to one another – next to, in front of, beside, between, behind, etc. 3. You should not introduce new information in your summary. Restate your thesis and how it has been addressed throughout the paper. Picture from: http://www.marcmatrana.com/Writing3.gif
