Persuasive Advertisement Assignment Notes Key terms: speaker, audience, occasion, and means of persuasion

Speaker O Speaker – voice in a poem/story/media etc.; the person or thing that is speaking O Do not confuse speaker with author O The author may be writing from a different point of view in order to validate his/her argument by using a reliable source or using a source that reaches a certain audience O EXAMPLE: In order to reach a young audience an old person might write from the perspective of a teenager or young adult.

Assignment: Speaker O correctly identified the speaker (company AND spokesperson/types of people seen in ad, etc.) and addressed the question of credibility (is this person or the people depicted credible to sell or talk to people about this product or issue)? O Why was this person chosen(would this person typically use this product or deal with these issues)?

Audience O Audience - The person(s) reading a text, listening to a speaker, or observing a performance. O Whoever the speech, poem, advertisement, etc. is meant for O Typically a type of group O Ex) Twilight was written (mainly) for young readers O EXAMPLE: The old author from the speaker slide was addressing specifically young people

Assignment: Audience O Correctly identified the target audience? O More specific than “People who watched the Super Bowl” O What is the relationship between the targeted audience for this advertisement and the publication in which it appeared (the Super Bowl)? O Why might the target audience be watching the Super Bowl?

Occasion O Occasion – a particular time or instance of an event; cause O Writers and speakers may write towards or because of a specific occasion O Ex) a speech at a wedding is different than one at a graduation O EXAMPLE: The old author may have written a poem from the perspective of a young person to show them to embrace life after the death of a teenager in the community.

Assignment: Occasion O Determined if this advertisement is dependent on a particular occasion, and if it is, how is that apparent? Or is it a nonspecific occasion? O Could this ad be seen apart from the Super Bowl or is there obvious ties to the game? O Why was it important that the ad was made specifically to be shown at the Super Bowl?

Means of Persuasion O Means of Persuasion – how does the author or speaker persuade you? O Tone, references to things you agree with or like, repetition, (basically anyway he/she relates to the audience)

Assignment: Means of Persuasion O Correctly identified the means of persuasion (fear, limited opportunity, bandwagon, sex, popularity, status, etc.) O What made this ad effective?
