Project Three Remediation

Here is the Project Description from Project Three: *Students will produce a remediation that retains the same purpose/claim as the essay but that presents the evidence-based argument in a digital medium. *When choosing a digital medium, students should consider their audience and purpose as well as accessibility and the conventions associated with the medium.

Okay, that’s great and all… But what the heck does “remediation” even mean?

Let’s start from the very beginning… When someone remediates, they are working off an original text. But what exactly is an original text…? What do you think a text is?

A book…?

What about…?

So now we know how many ways we can interpret “text”… But what does it mean to “find and remediate a text”?

To remediate is to change the form of the text for a new audience and/or purpose Remediation is the process of taking a text—whether it is a newspaper article, a story, a film or even something like a business proposal or a report—and translating it into a new medium.

Let’s look at some “remediation” examples where the original text has changed for a new purpose and audience

Original Text: Mario Mario ( マリオ Mario?) is a fictional character in the Mario video game franchise by Nintendo, created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Serving as Nintendo's mascot and the protagonist of the series, Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. Though originally only appearing in platform games, starting with Donkey Kong, Mario currently appears in varied video game genres such as racing, puzzle, party, role-playing, fighting and sports. Who is the audience? What is the purpose?

Remediation: Valdrum Meets Super Mario Bros Who is the audience? What is the purpose? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZqwvjwqwK4

Original Text: 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Major Henry Livingston Jr. (1748-1828) Purpose? Audience? One year he wrote this poem, which we usually call "'Twas the Night before Christmas," to give to his children for a Christmas present. They read it just after they had hung up their stockings before one of the big fireplaces in their house. Afterward, they learned it, and sometimes recited it, just as other children learn it and recite it now. Remediated: ‘Twas a Florida Christmas Purpose? Audience? http://www.netcore.ca/~gkillops/twas6.html

The Original Text: Disney Princesses Who is the audience? What is the purpose?

The Real Housewives of Disney https://screen.yahoo.com/disney- housewives-000000627.html Who is the audience? What is the purpose? Another example of Remediation to think of in terms of Disney princesses: Rapunzel  Tangled

Original Text: Romeo and Juliet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwnFE_NpMsE Who is Shakespeare’s audience? England who liked to go to plays. Purpose? There’s some message for those in attendance. Remediation: Sassy Gay Friend Who is the audience? What is the purpose?

Now that we’ve viewed some original texts and remediation examples here are a few things to remember:

Important Quote to Consider (Rhetoric Matters, 240)

Why is audience important? “Audience is one of the most important elements of the remediation process because the composer (you) must take into consideration how his or her work will be understood and interpreted” (RM, 240).
