3 First GODAE OceanView Science Team Meeting, Mercator-Ocean, Toulouse, 8-10 June 2009 3 GODAE OceanView Science Team CORE ACTIVITIES: A forum where the main operational and research institutions involved in global ocean analysis and forecasting develop collaborations and international coordination. TASK TEAMS: These teams will address specific topics of particular importance to GODAE OceanView that require collaboration with international research programs (e.g. OOPC, CLIVAR, IMBER, SOLAS, WCRP) or other groups (e.g. coastal community). ET-OOFS: Operational aspects related to product harmonization and standardization will be carried out by the JCOMM ET-OOFS.

Observing System Evaluation [Peter Oke & Gilles Larnicol] –Assess the impact of observations on forecasts and analyses and improving the design of the global ocean observing system. (includes developing new approaches). Coastal Ocean and Shelf Seas [Pierre DeMey & Villy Kourafalou] –Assessing and demonstrating the value of GODAE OceanView results for regional,coastal and shelf seas analysis and forecasting systems (includes coupling open ocean/coastal zone; seamless transition from the open sea down to the coastal zone). Marine Ecosystem Analysis and Prediction Task Team [Pierre Brasseur & Nicolas Gruber] –Developing new strategies for the design and exploitation of analysis and forecasting systems for ecosystem applications. Others to be explored, e.g. coupled data assimilation – NWP community

8 First GODAE OceanView Science Team Meeting, Mercator-Ocean, Toulouse, 8-10 June 2009 8 Intercomparison and Validation Various intercomparison efforts of GODAE products to quantitatively evaluate methodologies to judge strengths and weaknesses of the forecasting systems: e.g. MERSEA, basin-scale intercomparisons etc. European MERSEA Project in collaboration with other international GODAE projects has built a common methodology for real-time inter- comparison of forecast systems. Metrics are defined and aim at testing the consistency, quality and performance of each system (Class 1 to 4). Requires collaboration between modellers and interactions with user community to agree upon the definition of metrics which will be systematically used for assessing the quality and consistency of system outputs and the sharing of experience through critical analysis of inter-comparison exercises.

9 First GODAE OceanView Science Team Meeting, Mercator-Ocean, Toulouse, 8-10 June 2009 9 Intercomparison and Validation During IGST-XII (2007) it has been agreed to perform a demonstration of intercomparison among GODAE partners: The main objectives were –to demonstrate operational ocean systems in action –to assess the quality of hindcast ocean products –to perform intercomparisons among the different operational centers –to promote validation and intercomparison as part of future "ensemble multi model forecast" applications. Intercomparison exercise, in real time, during the Feb-April 2008, 3 months period. Assessment relied on Class 1 and Class 2 metrics that were made available by each partner.

10 First GODAE OceanView Science Team Meeting, Mercator-Ocean, Toulouse, 8-10 June 2009 10 Observing System Evaluation GODAE OceanView systems are powerful means to assess the impact of the global observing system, to identify gaps and to improve the efficiency/effectiveness of the observing system. OSEs or OSSEs are useful tools which have been applied to high-resolution ocean forecasting, seasonal-to-interannual prediction, and climate analysis and reanalysis OSEs are flexible tools as they can be used to examine the impact of observations on a particular application (e.g. surface current forecasts for marine safety applications) or to give insight into the effectiveness of the data assimilation systems that are being used

14 First GODAE OceanView Science Team Meeting, Mercator-Ocean, Toulouse, 8-10 June 2009 14 Marine Ecosystem Analysis and Prediction Task Team Established in June 2007. Objectives of the MEAP-TT: (i)to foster research on ecosystem modeling and assimilation strategies that are compatible with constraints of operational systems; (ii) to further assess and demonstrate the value of operational products for marine ecosystem monitoring and prediction; (iii) to expand the concept of the “GODAE metrics” to biogeo- chemical variables and to develop intercomparison exercises across international groups; (iv) to identify the essential sets of physical and biogeochemical observations required to constrain the coupled models and formulate relevant recommendations on these issues; (v) to promote and organize educational activities (summer schools, training workshops, etc.) aimed at sharing experience between young scientists, operational oceanographers and marine ecosystem experts. Links with IMBER, GEOTRACES and SOLAS. (Incl. former IMBER-GODAE WG)

15 First GODAE OceanView Science Team Meeting, Mercator-Ocean, Toulouse, 8-10 June 2009 15 Marine Ecosystem Analysis and Prediction Task Team So far has focused on 3 key areas: –(i) develop applications of GODAE products to ecosystem and biogeochemistry projects. –(ii) specify requirements to integrate biogeochemistry and ecology into ocean data assimilation systems (e.g. need for improved representation of upper ocean processes such as turbulent mixing and vertical advection). –(iii) design and improve the observing system for marine ecosystems and biogeochemistry –Key findings and conclusions in a synthesis paper (Brasseur et al., 2009) and presented at 2008 GODAE Symposium. 2009: Revisit IMBER-GODAE working plan proposed in 2007, taking into account the recommendations of the IGST, GOVST and ISSC. Organize second joint IMBER-GODAE OceanView workshop in early 2010 in order to review the progress made and elaborate a more structured framework of activities until 2013.

GODAE systems need continuous improvements and should benefit from scientific & technological advances in data processing, data serving, modeling and data assimilation (incl. evolution of the observing system). GODAE systems are also evolving to satisfy new requirements (e.g. coastal zone and ecosystem monitoring and forecasting, climate monitoring and reanalysis). Challenges require international collaboration and cooperation

20 First GODAE OceanView Science Team Meeting, Mercator-Ocean, Toulouse, 8-10 June 2009 20 GODAE OceanView Objectives The primary purpose of GODAE OceanView is to accelerate the improvement and exploitation of real-time operational ocean forecasts, hindcasts and reanalysis through exchange of information and expertise and the coordination of joint assessments. The activities which the GODAE OceanView Science Team will focus on are: - assessments of the performance of and development of improvements to the components of the forecasting systems - initiatives aiming to exploit the forecasting systems for greater societal benefit - evaluations of the dependence of the forecasting systems and societal benefits on the components of the observation system
