5.1 Teacher Notes Energy Resources

energy resources - natural resources that we use for energy (wind/water/fossil fuels) energy resources - natural resources that we use for energy (wind/water/fossil fuels) fossil – a once living plant or animal that died and was imbedded into a rock fossil – a once living plant or animal that died and was imbedded into a rock fossil fuels - nonrenewable energy resources that are found in the Earth’s crust that come from dead plants and animals (can be a liquid, solid, or gas) fossil fuels - nonrenewable energy resources that are found in the Earth’s crust that come from dead plants and animals (can be a liquid, solid, or gas) IMPORTANT: fossil fuels energy IMPORTANT: fossil fuels energy is released as heat is released as heat

3 types of fossil fuels: 3 types of fossil fuels: liquid fossil fuels = petroleum (crude oil) liquid fossil fuels = petroleum (crude oil) solid fossil fuels = coal (used in a barbeque) – changed into heat solid fossil fuels = coal (used in a barbeque) – changed into heat gaseous fossil fuels = natural gas (stove, heater) – changed into heat (produces less pollution than coal) gaseous fossil fuels = natural gas (stove, heater) – changed into heat (produces less pollution than coal)

Problems with using fossil fuels for energy: Problems with using fossil fuels for energy: 1. Pollution (air, land, & water) 2. Increasing carbon dioxide in atmosphere, which is contributing to global warming 3. acid precipitation – rain or snow that has a high acid content due to air pollution 4. smog – a fog that exists when sunlight touches air pollution

What can you do to help solve the problem of fossil fuels? (please be practical): What can you do to help solve the problem of fossil fuels? (please be practical): 1. Travel by bus 2. Carpool 3. Walk, ride a bike
