What is Engineering? The application of mathematical and scientific concepts to create practical and useful things that benefit people. Almost everything you eat, wear, use and like to do involves engineering. What do you think has been engineered in the room you are in?

Why become an Engineer? You can have a challenging and rewarding career using your skills in numeracy, creativity, ingenuity, and practicality to make a real impact on the world. As an engineer you will be using your ability to create and design solutions to meet people’s needs. You can be at the forefront of innovation and make a more sustainable world. Your job may involve making things that have not yet been imagined.

“ “ Engineering uses maths and science to enable us to do ordinary and extraordinary things - the buildings we live in, the infrastructure we travel on, the trains, cars and aeroplanes we travel in, the factories and machinery that make things, and lots more besides. Professional engineers design these things, and take charge of their manufacture or construction. They need good mathematical ability, but much more than that. ” They have to be imaginative, responsible, creative, and they must be very good at working with all sorts of other people. Geography, economics, art, history, modern languages, psychology, as well as the traditional maths and physics, can all help you to become an excellent engineer. ” --Civil Engineering Admissions Tutor at the University of Bath

What is Civil Engineering? Civil Engineers design and build our infrastructure – the buildings, transport and water systems that are vital to our world. They are challenged with building future infrastructure at minimal cost, with minimal energy consumption, and with minimal impact on the environment. Civil Engineers are vital to building a more sustainable world.

What is Chemical Engineering Chemical Engineers create and control the chemical and biological processes to convert raw materials into useful products. They take processes developed in the laboratory and transform them to an industrial scale. They must do this safely, efficiently, with minimal energy consumption, and with minimal impact on the environment.

What is Electrical Engineering? Electrical Engineers harness the properties of electricity in areas as diverse as communication and computing to power generation and transmission.

What is Mechanical Engineering? Mechanical Engineering is the application of physical principles to the solution of practical problems. Mechanical Engineers design everything from individual components to whole systems. They use advances in materials science to find new ways of making things, and new things to make, working with other professionals to understand needs and develop ideas.

Women in Engineering Women are traditionally underrepresented in the engineering profession, but have a large part to play in its future. At the University of Bath we are supporting our female staff, students and alumni in a number of ways. Visit our website www.bath.ac.uk/engineering/women to find out about studying and working in engineering, what funding opportunities you may be entitled to, and the latest news from our Faculty.www.bath.ac.uk/engineering/women Our Student Women’s Engineering Society (WESBath) has been formed to empower current students within the Faculty of Engineering & Design, as well as to help encourage the future generation. Find out more about them by visiting www.bath.ac.uk/engineering/women/society and by following them on Facebook and Twitter.www.bath.ac.uk/engineering/women/society
