Bell Work Date Cause and Effect A famous question goes like this… …Which came first, the chicken or the egg? 1) On your paper write a paragraph explaining your answer to this question. Identify which part is the cause and which part is the effect. SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Please have your exit work in front of you and remain quiet for a video.

What is cause and effect? Cause and effect refers to a connection or relationship between two actions or events Here is a way to think about this topic:..if you do this one action then this other action will occur -The cause: is the first action or event -The effect: is the resulting consequences Example: In first period a student has a headache and is sleepy. The night before they stayed up late watching a funny TV show until 1:00 A.M.  Identify the cause and effect in this situation. (see next slide) Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science

Example: In first period a student has a headache and is sleepy. The night before they stayed up late watching a funny TV show until 1:00 A.M.  Identify the cause and effect in this situation. The cause (first action): was staying up late until 1:00 A.M. The effect (resulting consequences): headache & being sleepy Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science

Reminder:-The cause: is the first action or event Reminder: -The effect: is the resulting consequences Match the following causes and effects on your paper (Just write the number with the letter next to it) CausesEffects (1) Driver presses the gas pedal(A) A chemical reaction occurs (2) Two substances are combined(B) Student earns a 100 on a test (3) Student studies for one hour(C) Car travels fast Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science

Match the following causes and effects CausesEffects (1) Driver presses the gas pedal(A) A chemical reaction occurs (2) Two substances are combined(B) Student earns a 100 on a test (3) Student studies for one hour(C) Car travels fast Cause: (1) Driver presses the gas pedal Effect: (A) A chemical reaction occurs Cause: (2) Two substances are combined Effect: (C) Car travels fast Cause: (3) Student studies for one hour Effect: (B) Student earns a 100 on a test Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science

Purpose: To find out what went wrong, so we can fix it and avoid it in the future. Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science Cause and Effect Investigations Are Very Common Example: The Hindenburg explosion and crash (1937) Cause: (1) Theory: leaking hydrogen gas ignited by static electricity Effect: With 97 people on board, this airship exploded while trying to land. 36 people died.

Purpose: To find out what went wrong, so we can fix it and avoid it in the future. Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science Cause and Effect Investigations Are Very Common Example: Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion (1986) Cause: (1) O-rings on the rocket booster failed allowing fuel to leak out resulting in a massive explosion. Effect: This spacecraft exploded shortly after liftoff. All seven crewmembers were killed.

Most Famous Causes and Effect Investigation? Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science Newspaper Date April 16, 1912

Fact: In 1912 the Titanic was the largest ship in the world. On Apr 10, 1912 she left England with 899 sailors & 2,208 passengers. Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science The Sinking of the Titanic Fact: The Titanic was a luxury cruise ship with a swimming pool, 4 restaurants, 3 galleys, 2 libraries, a squash court, and a gym.

Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science The Sinking of the Titanic Fact: Although she could accommodate over 3000 people, they only had enough lifeboats to carry about 1178 people. Fact: She was constructed with 16 huge watertight compartments. Therefore the press called her "unsinkable." Fact: On the night of April 15, 1912, she hit an iceberg and sank. There were only 706 survivors. Over 1500 people died (68%). Video Link: Titanic Sinking AnimationTitanic Sinking Animation

Effect: sinking to the bottom of the sea Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science The Sinking of the Titanic What exactly was the cause? With 16 watertight compartments, what caused the Titanic to sink? The impact damaged five of the watertight compartments The water flowed over the top of the watertight bulkheads

The silent games You will be identifying the cause and effect in different situations One person will record answers, make sure your lab partners names are listed on your paper Simply match the correct cause to the correct effect on the paper slips YOU CANNOT TALK TO YOUR LAB PARTNERS (if you do your team will be disqualified) Once you think you have gotten all of the cause and effect strips in the correct order your GROUP LEADER must come to me. The first group to get all of the answers correctly will win 5 $3 a piece. DO NOT TURN OVER THE ANSWER STRIPS UNTIL YOU HEAR THE MUSIC Be prepared to share your answers!!!! “MAY THE ODDS EVER BE IN YOUR FAVOR”

Which of the following statements best describes the relationship between the water pressure on an object and the depth of the object in the ocean? A. Water pressure has no predictable relationship to the depth. B. Water pressure decreases as the depth increases. C. Water pressure does not change as the depth increases. D. Water pressure increases as the depth increases.

A beaker containing 50 mL of water is being heated from 20ºC to 50ºC, and during the heating time the rising temperature is recorded every two minutes. Which table shown below is best suited for recording the data? A B C D

The fuel efficiency of four different cars is shown in the table below. Fuel Efficiency Data CarFuel Efficiency (miles per gallon) W21 X29 Y16 Z42 Cars that burn fewer gallons of gasoline per mile are more fuel efficient. Understanding this fact, which answer choice below best matches the data in the table. B. Car Z has fuel efficiency worse than car Y, but is better than car W A. Car Y has the worst fuel efficiency C. Car X has the best fuel efficiency

The table below shows the relative amount of elements in soil from the moon Which graph best shows the data from the table?. A B

The graph shows a rabbit population that has increased due to the lack of predators. Which table below correctly displays the population data? AB
