2 The National Careers Service in prisons – Opening the Black Box

3 Guiding principles – ensuring quality (informed by Agency QA, Ofsted and the matrix Standard) 1.Quality/value driven not compliance driven 2.Through the gate activity begins as the prisoner comes through the gate 3.Data sharing between partners is ‘normal’ 4.The model is prisoner-focused and then adjusted to meet staff needs – and not vice versa 5.Every prisoner ‘gets it’ (the offers) 6.Every partner ‘gets it’(their relative roles/responsibilities) 7.All interventions pass the ‘TRIPP Test’ Timely Relevant Integrated Proportionate Productive

5 Role of National Careers Service at induction and beyond Advice regarding learning and work whilst in custody to fit in with longer term goals Sequencing with Education and CRC to inform sentence plan and allocation process Intervention depends on length of sentence and length of stay in that establishment – different model in local prisons Distance learning Career planning

6 Pre-release support Employability support – CV building, Job Search, live vacancies, interview techniques (using Virtual Campus where appropriate) Disclosure workshops Soft skill interventions – motivation, confidence, self-marketing Bring on Potential Use of local Labour Market Information

7 Through the gate Warm handover to National Careers Service Adviser in the area of release Co-location in every Jobcentre – work with all new claimants Close working with CRC, Probation and other local support agencies Specialist agencies delivering as sub-contractors

8 Careers Inspiration Working with Strategic managers within resettlement establishments to provide employer-led inspirational activities to prisoners Six month contract – so emphasis on sustainability Self-assessment toolkit, focusing on impact rather than activity Aim is to pull activities together in a strategic employer engagement plan linked to impact and outcomes through the gate

9 Partnerships – where it’s working well Induction and sequencing Joint workshop delivery – pre-release programme with Education and CRC Warm transfer to National Careers Service through the gate in other areas Involvement in Quality Improvement meetings Clear employer engagement strategy involving key partners

10 Challenges under Transforming Rehabilitation Data sharing both within establishments and through the gate –Resettlement plans –Customer contact details –Outcomes Risk of duplication Understanding of the CRC contract in each area
