Notes  You will be receiving a study guide for your final this week  It is recommended you begin studying now  Look through previous handouts  Your final is worth 20% of your final grade

Literary Research Paper  Introduction to paper  Key terms  Formatting

Thesis  A sentence (or two) found (usually) at the end of the introduction paragraph which:  1. introduces your topic  2. introduces the stance you take  3. is analytical (not so and so happens)

Macbeth  Primary Sources – the text you are analyzing - Macbeth

Concrete Details  The specific examples taken FROM THE TEXT are considered your CONCRETE DETAILS Can be quotes and paraphrased passages  Ex. Macbeth says, “… Bear-like, I must fight the course”  Ex. Lady Macbeth sleep-walks and says she can’t clean the blood off her hands

Writing Commentary

What is Commentary? Commentary means your response, reaction, or reflection about a concrete detail (in other words a quote) you are discussing in an essay.

Commentary Continued… When you write commentary, you are “commenting on” a point you have made. Synonyms for commentary include “analysis,” “discussion,” “insight,” and “evaluation.”

Originality and Creativity of Commentary Commentary is a difficult skill to master because all the analysis and evaluation of the details must come from YOU. It is up to you to devise some original, individual statements to make regarding your details and examples.

Model Paragraph Concrete Details:  “Critics complain about coyotes…”  “Animals battle over birds, carrots, etc…”  “The most violent person often gets the food…” WHERE IS THE COMMENTARY???

Secondary Sources  Critics (authors, Doctors [not the health type], Grad Students…) who specialize in one field publish their research  We look through this research to learn new and insightful points

Example  While breaking up an essay I found one critic who argues the character labeled “The Attendant” is actually the “Third Murderer” who attacks Banquo

Picking Apart Secondary Sources -We have selected four secondary sources which appeal to the two suggested prompts -You may use additional sources -You will be asked to do this individually during Writing Themes / Research Paper
