Compaq Availability Manager Installation, Configuration, Setup and Usage Barry Kierstein

2 What is the Availability Manager? A real-time monitoring, diagnostic and correction tool for OpenVMS A DECamds equivalent that runs on OpenVMS Alpha and Windows Uses a PC-type interface for easy access to data Collects and displays data even when nodes are hung

3 Availability Manager - Overview The Data Analyzer monitors nodes running the Data Collector

4 Availability Manager – GUI overview System Overview

5 Availability Manager – GUI overview Node Summary – CPU data

6 Availability Manager – GUI overview Node Summary – Memory data

7 Availability Manager – GUI overview Node Summary – Disk data

8 Availability Manager – GUI overview Single disk – Cluster view

9 Availability Manager – GUI overview Node Summary – Lock contention

10 Availability Manager – GUI overview Single process – Execution rates

11 Availability Manager – GUI overview Single process – Job quotas

12 Availability Manager – GUI overview Single process – Modifying the process

13 Availability Manager – GUI overview Single process – Modify Direct I/O quota Modifying a process or node is called a “fix”

14 Availability Manager – GUI overview Node level fixes – Crash node Adjust quorum

15 Availability Manager - Terms AM or AvailMan –Short for Availability Manager Data Analyzer –GUI front-end and data analysis Data Collector –Called Data Provider for DECamds product –A device driver that shows up as device RMA0:

16 AM and DECamds - A closer look DECamds (AMDS for short) –Initial product offering –Data Analyzer is a Motif-based application Runs on VAX and Alpha platforms Runs under OpenVMS V6.2 - V7.3

17 AM and DECamds - A closer look DECamds (cont’d) –Data Collector Consists of an OpenVMS device driver, configuration and startup files Enables data collection even on a hung system Runs on VAX and Alpha platforms Runs on OpenVMS V6.2 through V7.3

18 AM and DECamds - A closer look AM –Eventual successor to the DECamds product Functional enhancements will be made to AM only –Data Analyzer is a Java-based application Runs on OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 through V7.3, Windows NT V4 and Windows 2000 platforms –Gathers data from: OpenVMS nodes using the Data Collector

19 AM Installation Windows NT –Standard InstallShield installation –Assumes one person per PC AM configuration data is stored in the installation directory

20 AM Installation OpenVMS Alpha –Download and install Java 1.1.8 first –Download and install AM (a PCSI kit) Read the installation instructions for setup information –Insert the following line in the LOGIN.COM of the accounts that will run AM: $ @SYS$MANAGER:JAVA$SETUP –AM and DECamds can be installed on the same machine

21 AM Running Environment The Data Analyzer and the Data Collector communicate by a private Ethernet protocol –Independent of a node’s IP or DECnet software –The protocol is not routable The Data Analyzer must be on the same LAN as the Data Collector(s) Routers can be configured to bridge the protocol –Protocol ID: 08-00-2B-80-48 »(08-00-2B - DEC prefix, 80-48 - protocol ID) –Multicast Address: 09-00-2B-02-01-09

22 AM Running Environment AM Group name –Groups various nodes together –All nodes in an OpenVMS Cluster need to be in the same group for proper collection of cluster data Security –The Data Analyzer must send a valid AM password to the Data Collector for the Data Collector to send information back to the Data Analyzer

23 AM Data Collector Setup Use the AM V1.4 installation kit to install the Data Collector Set up a group name in SYS$MANAGER:AMDS$LOGICALS.COM Set the security password(s) in SYS$MANAGER:AMDS$DRIVER_ACCESS.DAT Add the following to the system startup procedure: $ @SYS$STARTUP:AMDS$STARTUP START

24 AM Current Status AM is now at V1.4 Accessible from the OpenVMS homepage: http://www.openvms.compaq.com/openvm s/products/availman/ AM is now a close functional equivalent to the DECamds product

25 AM Current Status V1.4 –A GUI transplant from the Microsoft Java GUI classes to the Sun Swing GUI classes –Wildfire hardware support –Various bugfixes –More stability –Better performance

26 AM V2.0 New internal infrastructure to support new features Initial support for Wildfire/Galaxy Support for Switched LAN Support for user-specified event notification Other enhancements

27 AM V2.0 New internal infrastructure to support new features –Provide an internal interface between the Data Collector and various operating system components –Add new components more quickly –Easier maintenance

28 AM V2.0 Initial support for Wildfire/Galaxy –New Memory view for OpenVMS V7.3 Alpha nodes –Show memory use by RAD for a process –CPU modes view shows RAD for CPU –CPU process list show home RAD for a process –Node summary shows the number of RADs configured, system serial number, and Galaxy ID of a node when applicable

29 AM V2.0 Support for Switched LAN –Shows LAN path data –Support viewing for multiple paths

30 AM V2.0 Support for user-specified event notification –An event can be configured to execute a user-specified OpenVMS command procedure or Windows NT/ Windows 2000 batch file

31 AM V2.0 Other enhancements –Help displayed by built-in browser –AM installs with its own Java runtime environment –ODS-5 file system support –Process page file quota fix –Simpler mechanism for site-specific configuration and setup

32 AM Futures Post V2.0 –Support for planned enhancements to the next major release of OpenVMS –Enhancements for monitoring Galaxies –Separate the GUI from the data analysis Allow for remote monitoring over IP
