2 What is the IB Design Cycle?
The IB design cycle is a tool used by International Baccalaureate students to help them create and reflect on answers to problems. There are four major stages of the design cycle: Investigate Plan Create Evaluate

5 Step 1: Investigate Investigate: Identify or look out for the problem to be solved. Explore resources, i.e. the internet, documents, books, magazines. Questions to ask: Do I understand this project? Do I have the materials I need to create it at home or do I need to go to the library ? Do I need to purchase any materials? Do I have enough time to complete it? Example: Goal is to make a scrapbook that will describe a trip to the western frontiers. Research online sources, go through the history textbook, encyclopedias to find good explanations. What information do you need for your scrapbook ?

6 Step 2 Plan Plan: Come up with a timeline to complete your project.
Questions to ask: Do I understand this project? Do I have the materials I need to create it at home or do I need to go to the library ? Do I need to purchase any materials ? Do I have enough time to complete it? Example: Goal is to make a scrapbook that will describe a trip to the western frontiers. Read and make your notes or story to go with your scrapbook. Research the geography of the western United States Research and select pictures or other materials for your scrapbook. Experiment with different designs that suits the project you are working on. Choose a design Go through the project rubric to see if you are following the specifications.

7 Step 3: Create Create: This is when you come up with your final product by using the plan in step 2. Questions to ask: Questions to ask: Do I understand this project? Do I have the materials I need to create it at home or do I need to go to the library ? Do I need to purchase any materials? Do I have enough time to complete it? Example: Goal is to make a scrapbook that will describe a trip to the western frontiers. Use your plan to come up with your scrapbook. Go through the project rubric to see if you are following the specifications. Go over your work and see if you need to make any changes.

8 Step 4: Evaluate Evaluate: This is when you go over and reflect on your scrapbook. Questions to ask: Did my scrapbook meet the requirements of the project? Do I need to make any final changes? Example: Goal is to make a scrapbook that will describe a trip to the western frontiers. Use your plan to come up with your presentation. Evaluate your scrapbook. How did it look?

10 IB Design Cycle Assignment
Assignment –Part 1a Choose your topic from the list or one of your own. Draw the IB Design Cycle in your Notebook. Below the IB Design Cycle drawing, make a list of all required steps, materials, etc. Write this information next to each part of the design cycle. Assignment –Part 1b Create a PowerPoint slide. Use Smart Art to create the IB Design Cycle. Use text boxes to explain each step of the IB Design Cycle. Present your slide to the class for evaluation.

11 Make a timeline to complete your project.
Step # 4: Reflect on your work. Does it look nice and aesthetically pleasing? Did I follow all the guidelines and requirements? Creating a Scrapbook Step# 1 Research different individuals involved in the westward movement. Consider the geography and the dangers of travels, and time you will need. When is the best time to travel? Investigate Step # 1 Step # 2 Plan Step # 3 Create Evaluate Step # 4 Step # 2 Plan When are you starting your journey. Make a list of the supplies you will need for your trip. Make a timeline to complete your project. Step # 3 Create: Time to start scrapbooking! Get busy putting your scrapbook together according to your plan in step 2.
