Using JUSP to aid the NESLi2 journals renewals process Alison Brock19 th April 2012

Process in 2011 Collect JR1 and JR1A usage figures from individual NESLi2 publishers websites for 2010 Create Excel spreadsheet for each NESLi2 publisher Add title cost from publishers websites/NESLi2 or our own records Calculate cost per use Add details of faculty to each subscribed title Discussed with faculty representatives and titles then flagged for swaps or, if possible, cancellations

Issues with old process Getting figures from publisher websites was time consuming Different output formats for each publisher Occasionally spotted errors in figures long after they had been collected Whole process was long-winded Sometimes didn’t have time to collect data before decision needed to be made

Process in 2012 – Step 1 Collect JR1 and JR1A reports from JUSP for calendar year 2011

Process in 2012 – Step 2 Export JR1 and JR1A Reports for each NESLi2 publisher to Excel Sort by total use (high to low)

Process in 2012 – Step 3 Remove monthly columns and others not required Add in cost data Calculate cost per use Highlight titles – High use non-subscribed PINK – Low use subscribed ([core] in front of title) GREEN

Process in 2012 – Step 4 Add details of faculty to each subscribed [core] title Recommend swaps or, if possible, cancellations to faculty representatives Collate information ready for journals renewals in 2013

Benefits of new process All outputs should be the same for each publisher Easier to collate and compare information JUSP processes ensure the data should be reliable

Issues with new process Need to have added information on subscribed [core] subscriptions beforehand Could subscription agents/publishers have a role here in telling JUSP what we subscribe to? Need to add price information Potentially possible to add this to JUSP? Need to calculate cost per use Could do this if price information was available?
