2. SAFE/EFFECTIVE USE OF EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES

PURPOSE To provide guidelines for the instruction of patients and family/caregivers regarding the safe, effective use of medical equipment and/or supplies POLICY: Patients will receive information regarding the safe and effective use of DME in accordance with applicable home health policies. When equipment is supplied by another organization, home health personnel will be supportive in the patient teaching role

4. PROCEDURE As part of the comprehensive assessment, the patient will be assessed as to the medical equipment being used within the home. The clinician will, through interview and observation, determine patient and family/caregiver level of understanding in the use of the equipment and supplies ordered for care.

5. DME TEACHING and Education should include: Basic purpose and description of the equipment Basic operating instructions Troubleshooting Safety precautions and warnings Cleaning and/or disinfecting Infection control precautions as applicable Backup equipment and accessories, if applicable Correct use of equipment Checklists, when appropriate Maintenance to be performed by patient (their role) Storage and/or transport of equipment
