Estimating and measuring time, temperature, mass, and weight Lesson 4 (4 th 6 Weeks) TEKS 6.8 A/B

Time  Tools used: clocks and calendars  Units used: seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years

Example:  Mark practices his trombone every day of the week except on Saturday and Sunday. He practices a total of 35 minutes each day. How many hours and minutes will Mark practice his trombone in one week? 35 x5 5 2 17mins. 60 mins. = 1 hr 120 mins. = 2 hrs 175 120- 55 2 hrs & 55 mins.

Elasped Time  The amount of time that has passed  Found by counting from the starting time to the finishing time

Example  Winnie gets to work at 7:45 am each morning. She leaves work at 4:15. How long is Winnie at work? 7:454:15 891011121234 78 15 8 hrs & 30 mins. 123456

Temperature  Measured with thermometer  Fahrenheit scale –Customary scale –Water freezes at 32° F –Water boils at 212° F  Celsius scale –Metric system (based on 100) –Water freezes at 0° C –Water boils at 100° C

Example  At 2 p.m. the temperature was 65° F. If the temperature drops 4° F per hour, what will the temperature be at 7 p.m.? 2 pm - 65° F 3 pm - 61° F 4 pm - 57° F 5 pm - 53° F 7 pm - 45° F 6 pm - 49° F

Mass and Weight  Similar, but not equal  Mass: measure of the amount of matter in an object –A balance is used to measure mass –Use metric units  Weight: measure of how heavy an object is –A spring scale is used to measure weight –Use customary and metric units

Example  Billy buys 2 pounds 8 ounces and 1 pound 10 ounces of ground beef. How many pounds of ground beef did Billy buy? 2 lbs 8 oz 1 lbs 10 oz+ 3 lbs 18 oz 1 lb = 16 oz +1 lb-16 oz 4 lbs 2oz
