8 Writing Traits Word Choice (Writing Models Chart p. 2) - The writer uses descriptive and exact words that help the reader to see, feel, and understand the message. It rained. The rain fell in sheets and flooded the field. Example 1 On the day of the race, the sun was shining brightly and blazing high in the sky. As I began the long race, I adjusted my baseball cap to keep the sun out of my eyes and took a sip from my water bottle. Example 2 I ran in a race. It was a long race. It was hot.

9 Writing Traits Voice (Writing Models Chart p. 2) - makes readers think a real person is speaking and cares about message, how the writing sounds How you talk to your friends is different than you talk to your teacher. Your voice in a funny story is different from your voice in a science report.

10 Voice, cont. story science report letter to a friend  Who might be the audience, or reader, of each of these types of writing? How would the author’s voice be different for each writing form?  Think about… Do I sound interested in this subject? Does this writing sound like me? How do I want my readers to feel?
