Classroom Modifications What is going to be special about special education? A discussion of changes you or your child could request from Spirit Lake Consulting, Inc.

Your Assignment- Individually or in a small group, for each modification named, give an example of when you have used it or seen it used. Write down your ideas, as you will be posting these on the forum! Small groups Reduction of paper/pencil tasks Shortened assignments Assignment notebooks Supplemental aids (vocabulary, multiplication cards, etc.)

More Modifications Functional level materials –When teaching eighth grade, I had students who were at the fourth grade level or lower in mathematics. Rather than trying to get them to Algebra, I focused on functional math skills and used worksheets on how to balance a checkbook or calculate a 10% price reduction - some things they might be expected to do on the job. Mnemonic aids/devices –e.g., HOMES, to remember the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) Overhead/outline for desk use

More Modifications Taped textbooks Large print material Word processor/spell checker Calculator Assistance with note-taking

More classroom modifications Visual demonstrations –for a student who had difficulty understanding the meaning of the word ‘absurd’, I once stood on my head in the classroom and said, “It is absurd to have your teacher standing on her head in the corner.” Presentation of material in small steps Read or paraphrase subject matter Instructions/directions given in different channels (written, spoken, demonstration)

More modifications Taped lectures Self-testing Grade only on completed class-work Credit for class participation, effort and attendance Additional time for test preparation Review/testing matched to student pace Test directions read/explained thoroughly

More modifications Fewer repetitive test items Test format allowing more space Oral, short-answer, modified tests Printing rather than cursive One-to-one contact for at least 10-20 minutes daily Tutoring Assistance with organization and planning of class work and/or homework

For students with behavior problems Emphasis on successes Seating to reduce distractions Frequent breaks Clearly defined limits Cooling-off period Behavior check cards Concrete, positive reinforcers
