Travel Tryouts Recap High School Coaches ran most tryouts. 2 nd Year in a row. Sunday slots made this easier / harder. WBA had more input into the Try-Out Agendas Pilot Evaluation Program was overall positive with a few decisions that were questioned by the

WBA - Safety CORI Forms needed ASAP www.westwoodbasketball.org Forms must be completed prior to 1 st practice All Head and Assistant coaches will need to complete a CORI background check Must have 2 adults at all practices Do not leave any child unattended following game or practice. Be smart about coaching actions and know your players will take on the personality of the coach. If you act like an ass, you are setting a really bad example for your players and that lead to safety concerns. Step in if a fellow coach is losing their cool with a player, parent, referee, or fan

WBA - Safety Greg Raftery– Safety Coordinator graf2667@hotmail.com (508) 726-6255

WBA - Safety Mouth Guards WBA strongly encourages all players to use mouth guards at practices and games. Coaches can mandate this on an individual team basis, but the WBA will not mandate mouth guards in order to play. Metro West and MIAA also strongly encourage the use of mouth guards by all players.

General Rules No shot clock, 10 second backcourt rule in effect. 8 minute quarters, 3 minute overtime, 5 full time outs per game (1 additional in OT). No pressing when up by 20. 1 and 1 with 7 th foul, double bonus at 10. Foul shots – In on release (other than shooter) Emphasis on Defensive Contact Rule

General Rules (continued) 5 foul disqualification (technical counts as both a personal and team foul). 2 technical fouls: disqualification for players and coaches. Coach’s receiving a technical foul must sit for the rest of the game. All technical fouls must be reported same day to the EC (fine for coaches). If the head coach does not report, may be subject to further action.

4 th and 5 th Grade Rules  28.5 ball for boys.  Foul shots: Can step in 1–step (either to start or with follow- through). Shooter cannot be first to secure the ball unless they have shot from foul-line and did not jump over.  Man-to-man defense only. No double teaming. First violation per half is a formal warning, then technical.  Press allowed in last 2 minutes of each half.  Double team rule exceptions:  Help defense inside the 3-point arc  Switching on a screen  Offensive team cannot isolate.

Other MW Guidelines Zero tolerance for players, coaches, and fans. Coach responsible for fan behavior. Refs will not continue game if inappropriate behavior continues. All follow-up regarding opposing team, opposing fan or ref issues, ref issues must be through MW coordinator (do not contact MW administration). Home team keeps official book. Home coach pays the refs ($40 for each ref. $60 if only 1 ref).

Cancellations  If gyms remain open, it is up to the coaches to decide if they want to postpone. Visiting team has final say.  If the game is postponed, let me know ASAP:  Post online on MW website  Cancel refs  Notify opposing town MW coordinator  Reschedule time  Reschedule referees (refs will get $50 each if rescheduled as 1- game only).  Non-weather rescheduling can be done only if agreed by both coaches (highly discouraged): only other option is forfeit.  Non-weather-related cancellations within 14 days of game result in $100 fine to MW, $80 paid to referees – total of $180.

MW Website  Prior passwords should still work. Default password is “westwood” for new coaches.  If “westwood” does not work, try “metrowest”  If neither work, use the “forgot my password” link to get a password.  Update your roster as soon as possible (players are carried over from last year edits are necessary).  When entering scores there will be prompts to fill out a brief questionnaire to evaluate the officials and the opposing teams spectator behavior.  Officials will have similar forms to assess the behavior of coaches and spectators.

Coaching Idea Teams with 11 or 12 players could offer each of their players one game off throughout the season. You would need to make sure only one or two players select the same game, but this could allow families to get away for a weekend and also help you play with a shorter bench. This would be a great task to delegate to a team parent or Assistant Coach.

Upcoming Board Meetings Thursday, November 19 th from 7:00 p.m.

Practice Time Draft We have 50 Practices and 51 Practice Slots Grades 5, 6, and 7 all have added a 3 rd team to either boys or girls or both 8 th Grade have been pre-slotted into the DCD Rand on Thursday nights (Splitting Gym) 4 th Grade Boys and Girls have been pre-slotted into the Downey and Hanlon on Friday Night 5 th Grade Boys have been pre-slotted into the DCD Rand and Primary on Friday Night Each Grade will draft numbers out of a hat for draft position

Practice Time Draft 8 th Grade Picks 1 st followed by 7 th, 6 th, 5 th Girls and then back to 8 th through 4 th 2 nd time around, reverse order will be used for grades 8 through 5 It is possible more gyms will become available if CYO releases gym time – we will not know until mid November Drafting will be made for the Regular Season (This may be different in November and it is your responsibility to know how this impacts your pick)

Practice Time Draft DCD Rand Gym will be split into 2 slots. It is strongly recommended that A and B teams of the same grade / gender take the gym and combine portions of practice for skills development on Friday Late Slot. Martha Jones may have 1 st 15 minutes of 6:00 p.m. practice in ½ of the gym while custodian clears the other half following Extended Day clearing out. This should not be a huge impact, but take it into consideration before selecting MJ. Once the draft is complete, trades can be made if both coaches agree with the trade. John Cummings will not act as a Trade Broker unless there is serious $$ involved..!!

Practice Time Draft Let the games begin..!!
