“In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” (1 Corinthians 5:4-5) Is the church responsible? Who are the subjects for discipline? What manner of action should be taken? What is to be done after the withdrawal is made? God has: A plan of salvation for the alien sinner A plan of discipline for the erring brother

Is the Church Obligated to Practice Discipline?  Church in Corinth was (1 Corinthians 5) –Discipline is the Biblical way of letting the fallen brother know that he is considered in the same way God considers him – out of fellowship and in need of repentance  Church in Pergamos was (Revelation 2) –Had those in their midst who held to false doctrines  Jesus said it was (Matthew 18) –Unrepentant person was to be treated as a heathen and publican (an outsider)  Paul reasoned why (1 Corinthians 5) –“purge out the old leaven” –“put out the wicked person” Open sin in the church cannot be overlooked. As soon as it is known it must be dealt with

Who Are the Subjects For Discipline?  The disorderly 2 Thessalonians 3:6  Those who will not work 2 Thessalonians 3:11  The busybodies 2 Thessalonians 3:11  The divisive (factious – ASV) Titus 3:10  Those who cause divisions and offenses Romans 16:17  Those who do not abide in the doctrine 2 John 9-11  The fornicator 1 Corinthians 5:11  The covetous 1 Corinthians 5:11  The idolater 1 Corinthians 5:11  The reviler 1 Corinthians 5:11  The drunkard 1 Corinthians 5:11  The extortioner 1 Corinthians 5:11 Who are the subjects for discipline? All who sin and WILL NOT repent are subjects for discipline

What Manner of Action Should Be Taken? AAll action should be done in the spirit of kindness and love GGalatians 6:1-2; 2 Timothy 2:24-26 PPrivate matters should be dealt with privately MMatthew 18:15-17 PPublic matters should be handled by the church 11 Corinthians 5 IIf unrepentant, then the brother must be marked or identified RRom 16:17; 2 Thes 3:14; 1 Tim 1:19-20 A public announcement should be made so that there is no misunderstanding as to what the church is doing

What is to be Done After Withdrawal is Made?  Note who they are (Rom 16:17; 2 Thes 3:14; Phil 3:17f)  Do not keep company with (2 Thes 3:14; 1 Cor 5:11)  Do not eat with (1 Cor 5:11)  Do not receive into your house (2 John 10)  Do not bid God speed (2 John 10-11)  Count as a heathen and publican (Matt 18:17)  Avoid (Rom 16:17; 1 Tim 6:5; 2 Tim 3:5)  Reject (Titus 3:10)  Count not as an enemy but admonish as a brother (2 Thes 3:15) This is the only means that we have of restoring those who refuse to repent

IF the Scriptural Procedures are Carefully Administered it WILL Accomplish Good!  Let no one say that discipline will not do any good and let no one be opposed to it  It may not lead EVERY sinner to repentance, but it frees the faithful from their blood (Ezekiel 3:18) “When I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.”
