 What is Discipline?  The Passages  Why is Discipline Necessary?  Who is to Administer Discipline?  Who is to be Disciplined?  What is the Purpose of Discipline? 1

2 The American Heritage Dictionary: “1. Training that is expected to produce a specified character or pattern of behavior, especially that which is expected to produce moral or mental improvement....4. A state of order based upon submission to rules and authority. 5. Punishment intended to correct or train....--tr.v....1. To train by instruction and control; teach to obey rules or accept authority. 2. To punish or penalize....” [Emphasis added]

 Preventive Discipline: All of the means and methods employed by a local church to prevent sin in the life of a Christian  Corrective Discipline: All of the means and methods employed by a local church to correct sin in the life of a Christian short of punishment  Punitive Discipline: Punishment administered by the local church after all other efforts have failed to bring a rebellious child of God to repentance and thus restoration 3

 Mt. 18:15-17  Rom. 16:17-18  1 Cor. 5:1-13  2 Th. 3:6-15  1 Tim. 1:18-20  [1 Tim. 6:3-5]  2 Tim. 3:1-9  Tit. 3:10-11  2 Jn. 9-11  2 Cor. 2:5-11 4

5 15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 “But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 “And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

6 17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.

7 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

8 9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world…since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral…--not even to eat with such a person. …. 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.”

9 6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. …. 14 And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

10 18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

11 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.

12 1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self- control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

13 9 But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless. 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.

14 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

15 6 This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man, 7 so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. 8 Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him. 9 For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things.

 Rom. 16:17: 17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned….  2 Th. 3:14: 14 And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person 16

 2 Th. 3:15: “Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.” 20 Admonition : gentle reproof; counsel or warning against fault or oversight. (Websters Collegiate Dictionary)

 2 Cor. 2:6-8: “ 6 This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man, 7 so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. 8 Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.” 21
