2  The moon moves from east to west across the sky in an arc.

3  The moon has an elliptical orbit, and revolves around the Earth.

4  The moon appears largest when it is closest to Earth and smallest when it is farthest away from Earth.

5  Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun on the oceans of Earth.

6  More extreme tides occur when the earth, moon and sun are in a straight line.

7  Less extreme tides occur when the earth, moon and sun are at right angles.

8  Really are the part of the lit side of the moon that we see

9 1. New Moon- no lit part can be seen

10 2. Waxing- lit to the right, lit side growing.

11 3. Full Moon- all is lit

12 4. Waning- dark to the right, lit side shrinking.

13  The phase is a crescent when less than half appears lit and called gibbous when more than half appears lit.

14  When half of the moon appears lit this is known as a quarter.
