Moon Notes Read the stuff in black. Write the stuff in RED in your notebook. Just because you don’t have to write it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to know it!

REVOLUTION When one object moves around another object. The path the object takes to move around the other object is called the orbit.

ROTATION To turn on an axis. Example: One rotation of the Earth takes 24 hours.

The Earth revolves around the Sun as the Moon revolves around the Earth. You may want to draw this diagram in your notebook.

Moon Phase - The appearance of the illuminated portion of the Moon as seen by an observer, usually on Earth.

Half of the EARTH is always illuminated by the Sun. Half of the Moon is always illuminated by the Sun.

Moon light is reflected sunlight.

New Moon 0% of the side of the Moon that we can see is illuminated. The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. This means we only see the dark half.

Full Moon 100% of the side of the moon that we can see is illuminated. The Sun, the Earth, and the Moon are lined up in that order. Draw this 

Quarter Moon Exactly 50% of the side of the moon that we can see is illuminated. The Sun, the Earth, and the Moon make a 90 degree/right angle. First Quarter (D shape) Last Quarter

Crescent Less than 50% of the side of the Moon that we can see is illuminated.

Gibbous More than 50% of the side of the Moon that we can see is illuminated.

Waxing Growing in size, the illuminated part of the moon that we can see is growing. Between New Moon and Full Moon

Waning Decreasing in size, the illuminated part of the moon that we can see is shrinking. Between Full Moon and New Moon.

PHASES OF THE MOON On the next slide is a diagram of the phases of the moon. It’s really hard to draw with a pencil because you have to draw the dark parts with your pencil and leave the white areas blank (because your paper is white). Draw that diagram in your notebook!

New Moon Waxing Crescent First Quarter Waxing Gibbous Full Moon Waning Gibbous Third Quarter Waning Crescent

Check out this diagram. Look how it shows views from above and views from Earth.
