4 4 Contracts - Cambridge Based on Cambridge University data – Engineering data: The proportions of male and female academic and research staff on fixed term contracts in 2014 are comparable For both men and women there are challenges as a high percentage of research staff are on fixed term, temporary contracts This is an issue for men and women * Info- courtesy of Dr Clare Barlow, Cambridge

5 5 Promotions & Turnover - Cambridge Based on Cambridge University data – Engineering data: Promotion success rates: Across all positions the success rate for women is higher, BUT numbers applying are very small Turnover of research staff is slightly higher for males than females. Reasons for leaving suggest that male researchers are more likely to resign than female researchers who are more likely to leave only at the end of their contract * Info - courtesy of Dr Clare Barlow, Cambridge THIS SUGGESTS THAT WOMEN SHOULD BE MORE PROACTIVE AND TAKE OWERNSHIP OF THEIR CAREERS!

8 Final thoughts.. "The most important factor in determining whether you will succeed isn't your gender, it's you. Be open to opportunity and take risks. In fact, take the worst, the messiest, the most challenging assignment that you can find, and then take control.” (Angela Braly, CEO of WellPoint) “Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it.” (Oprah Winfrey, CEO of OWN) “Just as my mother said, ‘You can do anything if you put your mind to it, you work hard and you take that responsibility,’ and I think that that would be my message.” (Marillyn Hewson, CEO of Lockheed Martin)

9 Final thoughts.. “Just do it” (Nike company slogan)
