Baseball aims to ban collisions at home plate By: Demi De Herrera

Fact or Opinion  Fact: runners are running into the catcher when stealing home plate  Opinion: I don’t think that running into the catcher when stealing home plate should be banned because it is part of the game.  Fact: the MLB directors are very strict about having runners run into the catchers  Opinion: I don’t think it is a big deal when the runner runs into the batter unless the catcher gets hurt.

When, where and how  When: this story took place in 1989  Where: Lake Buena Vista Florida.  How: this story is important because catchers are getting wiped out when runners are stealing home.  The safety of the athletes is a driving force to find new regulations that will ensure safety of all players.  Stealing bases in baseball is a tradition, but due to high risk of injuries, changes need to be made.

My prediction My prediction is that they will make new rules in the game of baseball. The new rules will add safety measures to the defensive and offensive players. The rules will add safety devices that can help the catchers.

My question How are the catchers getting hurt? Answer: batters are stealing home and the catchers are blocking home plate so the batters have no choice but to run into the catcher.

In Conclusion The MLB is not trying to change baseball as it is played, but make it safer. The easiest and most simply way to ensure collisions at home plate is to have the players avoid collisions, slide to the side of the plate or put in place stronger consequences for those players who do not avoid collisions.
