 A married person having sexual relations with someone not his spouse (wife or husband).  Also called “cheating on your spouse.”  Also called “having an affair.”  Also called “being unfaithful.”

 You broke your promise you made when you got married (to love your spouse only).  To keep from hurting your spouse.  To keep your family stable for your children.

 Sex  Marriage

 Genesis 1:28 (God says): “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. God provided sex (men and women) so that people could have babies and fill the earth, according to Genesis 1:27 “male and female he created them.”  The Bible considers having children to be a blessing.

 Marriage was God’s idea, according to Genesis 2:24: “For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall join with his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”  The “one flesh” means they will connect mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

 In Mark 10:9 Jesus said, “What God has joined together, man must not separate.”  Discuss: what is the advantage for the children, if the mom and dad remain together?

 Martin Luther explains that it means we are to be pure in our sexual lives, and after we are married, to love and honor our spouse (wife or husband).

 The “fear” part means that if we engage in sex outside of marriage, we admit it is sin and ask God to forgive us.  The “love” part means that when our new life asks how to show its love for God, the answer is to save sexual relations for marriage and to live in harmony with our spouse.

 Hebrews 13:4 says, “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”  “undefiled” means one spouse will not cheat on the marriage promise by having sexual relations with someone else. (adultery)  Fornicator means someone having sex outside of marriage.

 Are in our world because of sin.  Each of these words describes something the old nature would do.  When the old nature shows itself, it comforts us to know we have a God who loves us and forgives us.

 In Matthew 5:28, Jesus quotes the 6 th commandment, then explains it more deeply: “You have heard that it was said YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, but I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.”  “Lust” means “the wish to have sexual relations outside of marriage.”

 This command, like the others, helps you to realize you have a sin nature.  But God is with you to forgive sin, and God’s grace helps you to fight sin.

 Have you ever seen a movie that made it seem like a normal thing to have sex outside of marriage?  Have you ever heard a song that focused on sex?  Have you heard about kids who made fun of others who want to obey God in the matter of not having sex outside of marriage?

 Jesus says in Matthew 5:10: “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and say bad things about you on account of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great.”  End of sixth commandment. Go on:
