Russia Controlled Assessment CA Planning L.O. To begin to prepare for writing up your Controlled Assessment Starter: Get out your source packs ready to finish annotating them from the feedback of the final 2 groups

Source Analysis In groups, you are going to analyse some of the sources and feedback to the class so everyone has a fully annotated source pack For each source you need to comment on: Provenance – who, what, where, when, why Reliability? Sum up/interpret the content in your own words Supported by contextual knowledge? Remember: In your controlled assessment between 4-6 sources must be properly analysed and evaluated either by provenance, cross ref, context and/or content

Mind Map: Factors of Success What caused the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917? 4. Kerensky’s mistakes 3. Lenin as a leader 5. Strength of Bolshevik party and individuals such as Trotsky 2. Weaknesses of the Provisional Government 1. Pre-existing problems in Russia Plot the source numbers onto your mind map so you know where to refer to for evidence for each factor

Your Question “ How important was Lenin in bringing about the October Revolution in Russia in 1917?”

CA advice Housekeeping: Again it 2000 words MAX with a word count expected at the end and not any words over the limit as they will not be read Use a normal font ie Times New Roman or such other and can be 1.5 spaced to help with marking 10-12 sources must be used and they should mainly come from the source pack although they can come from other resources the boys have used Source numbers must be quoted with short refs to the most important phrases or sentences In the same sentence of a reference make sure students know how to reference either footnote from the insert menu or [Lynch, p12] {Walsh, p134] and then provide a bibliography which does not make up the word count Between 4-6 sources must be properly analysed and evaluated either by provenance, cross ref, context and or content – you can spend the last week teaching this skill All work they need for the CA must be in their exercise books or source pack and nothing else will be allowed in the CA rooms once the classes begin On no account should teachers help students as they write up their CA – they should all work individually and in as much silence as possible. As it is exam conditions no music or phones are to be allowed If they finish early in the final week they should get on with some revision You could set homework tasks to revise Paper 1 and do some practise questions as boys will not have homework from History and should make good use of the time available to revise Yr10 work If boys miss sessions we will run some in the last week of November – pass me through names of those who miss your classes and need to catch up Up until then you can look at example paragraphs and structures the boys have been working and aid the weaker boys – You must not mark whole essays in books and boys are not allowed to write up the whole thing and then rewrite it in the CA room – only parts for practise are permissible to keep with in the High Control CA requirements Collect books at end of each session and store in a cabinet/cupboard in 203/4

Essay Planning – how did Russia get to revolution? Source 48 (worth copying into your book to use in the write up): ‘The [November] Revolution has often and widely been held to have been mainly Lenin’s revolution. But was it? Certainly Lenin had a heavier impact on the course [of events] than anyone else. The point is, however, that great historical changes are brought about not only by individuals. There were other mighty factors at work as well in Russia in 1917…Lenin simply could not have done or even co-ordinated everything.’ Pre-existing problems Weaknesses of PG Lenin as leader Kerensky’s mistakes Strength of Bolshevik party e.g. Trotsky Would the Revolution have been possible without all these factors? Give each one a mark out of 5 for how important a role it played

Own KnowledgeSourceImpact (how did it contribute to Bolshevik Revolution?) Pre-existing problems in Russia Weaknesses of the Provisional Government Lenin as leader Kerensky’s mistakes Strength of Bolshevik party and individuals such as Trotsky How did Russia get to revolution? Lenin did play a role but what about the other factors? How did each of them contribute to Revolution? Fill in the third column of your table

Homework 1.Complete your table by filling in your own knowledge and the relevant sources 2.Go through your source pack – can you find any links/disputes between sources that you could cross reference in your essay? Due: 22/10
