Cherkasy is one of the most picturesque Ukrainian cities. Now it is a town of about 300,000 inhabitants, charmingly located on the river Dnieper.

General Outlook. Cherkasy is an administrative, economic, scientific and cultural centre of Cherkasy region. The region is the youngest one in Ukraine. It was founded on January7, 1954, but it is one of the most important economical regions of the country. It is known as a region of highly developed industry and advanced agriculture.

Excursion Around the Town As you take your first steps in our town from express train or local bus, Cherkasy welcomes you and presages many interesting meetings and discoveries during your stay.

Cherkasy is a well planed town. It’s streets are straight and wide, so it is easy to find the way here. In summer and in spring it looks like a garden. There is a lot of greenery and flower-beds near the streets. The Map of Cherkasy

History of Cherkasy. Cherkasy has an ancient history. People settled here about 800 years ago. But the town was ruined many times so few ancient buildings remain. But it has some sacred buildings, particularly significant objects of interest.

History of Cherkasy Tourists can learn the history of the town visiting the Cherkasy Local Lore museum, where they can find the ancient treasures from local areas. Among the exhibits we can see crafts, furniture from old farm houses, porcelain, glassware, costumes, documents relating to local history. The section of Archaeological and Natural History contains many significant finds from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages, offering a fascinating picture of life in Ukraine in early times.

Sights and Monuments. Cherkasy region is closely connected with the name of T. Shevchenko. Here in the village of Moryntsi he was born on March 9, 1814, and was buried in Kaniv. Shevchenko visited Cherkasy. Today the monument to great poet is in the town Theatrical Square.

The hard social and national oppression caused the appearance of cossacks in Ukraine. The first Cossack settlement was set up in the XVth century and Cherkasy became their stronghold in the struggle against the Polish gentry, the raids of Turks and Crimean Tatars. The monument to Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, the outstanding cossack Hetman, you can see in the centre of the town. Sights and Monuments.

During World War II a lot of soldiers gave their lives defending and liberating our Motherland. Sights and Monuments. To honour their memory you can visit the Hill of Glory. On May 9, thousands of people come there with flowers to remember the people who saved and preserved the peace for future generations.

Cultural life of Cherkasy is rich in events. We have Drama Theatre, Philharmonic, Concert Hall. At present many famous and popular actors and singers come to give concerts here. Sights and Monuments. Cherkasy Philarmonic Society is famous and loved by the residents of the city and its guests.

Educational Establishments. Cherkasy is also a seat of many institutions of higher learning, research and design organizations. One of the famous universities is Cherkasy State Technological University. It has 10 departments, over 9000 students study there. Another famous university is National State University named after B. Khmelnytskyi.

Transport of the Town. Cherkasy is in the central part of Ukraine. It is an easy place to reach. There is a river port from where you can travel by boats in summer. The network of railway roads and highways connects the town with other cities and towns of Ukraine. Transport system of the town is well-developed. Buses, trolley-buses, taxies can take you to any place you want.
