Biology Do Now: 1.Take out homework 2.Look at the ecosystem on your handout for today. Can you classify the organisms as producers, consumers, and decomposers?

Food Webs A diagram that represents feeding relationships between populations in an ecosystem. Populations can be producers, consumers, or decomposers. Try to put all of the organisms in the food web shown into those 3 categories Any Surprises?

It’s all about ENERGY! PRODUCERS get their energy from inorganic sources (like sunlight) AKA autotrophs CONSUMERS get their energy from ingesting other organisms. AKA heterotrophs DECOMPOSERS get their energy by breaking down the macromolecules of dead organisms

Energy flows through ecosystems The arrows show the direction in which energy flows through this ecosystem. What is the source of energy for the entire community shown? What do you think a “secondary consumer” is?

TROPHIC LEVELS / Energy Pyramid “No transfer of energy is 100% efficient” – 2 nd Law of Thermodynamics Did you know? It takes approximately 10.0 kg of hay and grain for a cow to produce 1 kg of beef?

Ecological Communities Populations in an ecosystem include PRODUCERS, CONSUMERS, and DECOMPOSERS. Energy flows through ecosystems from an inorganic source (usually sunlight) to all of the community populations. The more removed a population is from producers, the less energy is available.
