1 I Want To Pump...You Up: Restoring Lost Resources in Older Workers With an Intervention Motivating Physical Exercise Brandon Sholar, Barbara Fritzsche, Derek McMullen, Justin Stevens Purpose Intervention Methods Physical activity offers a wealth of benefits including reduced risk of cardiovascular, neurological, skeletal and metabolic illnesses. Many organizations, who suffer an estimated $300 billion in health-related losses annually, have begun workplace wellness initiatives designed to promote physical activity among their employees and mitigate these rising costs by ensuring a healthy workforce. Older workers may have even more to gain from workplace wellness initiatives than their younger counterparts due to the normal physical and cognitive declines associated with aging but workplace wellness programs have been less successful in attracting employees who are older, have higher BMIs, are less confident in their physical abilities, and suffer from more stress. This study will develop an intervention designed to improve wellness program adoption and adherence among older workers by motivating them both externally, through a system of rewards for participation, and internally through a number of strategies based on Self-Determination Theory including realistic, process-specific exercise goals that suit individual needs, emphasis on the affective benefits of exercise, and a support group of socially-similar individuals to aid in coping and adherence. We expect to see the positive benefits of exercise to spillover into positive workplace attitudes and performance through the increased availability of work resources. Research shows that workplace wellness programs improve physical and mental health for employees and reduce healthcare costs for the corporation; we maintain that such programs may offer a number of benefits for older workers including: Reduced work stress Improved work affective states (i.e.: job satisfaction, organizational commitment) Increased availability of work resources (i.e.: engagement, initiative) Improved job performance Because workplace wellness programs have historically been unable to attract and compel adherence from older workers, a motivational intervention is needed. This study will develop such an intervention and evaluate the results of increased physical activity for older workers. Week 1 Week 2Week 3 Week 4Week 5Week 6 Our intervention is a 6-week program with activities that engage participants and facilitate social support among the group. All participants will join a Facebook group. There will be educational postings on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday which follow a particular theme. Participants earn points (that ultimately result in prizes) for contributing by meeting goals, posting online, and conversing with others. Weeks 1 & 6 include extensive measures, and participants complete a pre and post survey each time they exercise. The measures will detect changes over the 6 weeks as a whole and during each week. Each week, participants will revise their goals as necessary. Participants encourage each other and help overcome barriers to exercise.
