3 World War: The Prequel  France Secretly begins to help the Colonial troops to defeat Britain and After Saratoga King Louis XVI began to aid American troops in the war  France also got Spain to help American Troops preventing the British from attacking from the southwest  France and Spain forced Britain to fight on MANY fronts, limiting the troops in the colonies

4 Have Bayonet…will travel  European Troops, like Marquis de Lafayette, began to help the colonial troops and bringing over a 6000 man French army  Germans such as Baron de Kalb and Baron von Steuben helped fight in the war and train the American Army  Steuben Helped turn the Army into a well trained fighting force and taught them important skills like using the Bayonet  Von Steuben turned the troops into a Model Army

5 All this in Parma??  General Washington and his troops are forced to set up camp at Valley Forge  The Troops at Valley Forge had little supplies and were badly beaten  Many of the troops at Valley Forge would need amputations, would starve, get sick, while many would die

6 Brothers in Arms  With congress slow to help, citizens, mostly women, would help the soldiers supplying them with food, clothes, and supplies  The temptation for soldiers to desert the army was high but many stayed for the love of their country and for Washington

7 A Hair Raising Battle  George Rogers Clark would lead an army in the frontier to capture the British posts on the western frontier  Clark made his way down to Kaskaskia, gathering troops, and was able to capture the fort with little fighting  Clark was also able to capture Fort Sackville from the British and defeated Henry Hamilton after traveling through icy, flooded swamps

8 Mistakes by the Lake?  Hamilton was not willing to Give up the fort, but Clark used deception to trick Britain into thinking he had a large army  Clark would also execute many Native Americans who had scalped the American troops to force a surrender  While the Colonists controlled most of the Great Lakes region, Lake Erie and Detroit remained under British Control

9 Do you SEA what I SEA  Great Britain took control of the Coastline by controlling the Atlantic Ocean  Through the use of Privateers, America started to attack British ships  The Privateers began to grow as volunteers, like James Forten, began join the war to fight the British

10 Turning the Tide  John Paul Jones Would lead a Naval Patrol against a British Convoy protecting supply ships  Jones would attack the Larger British Fleet ramming into the ships to damage them  Jones would Defeat the British Ships and sail home on the British ship he had just overtaken  While winning small battles at sea and angering the British, war would have to be won on the Homeland
