4 African Centre for Statistics Progress made If conducted as planned the by the end of 2012 the count of number of countries conducing PHCs will be 40 16 countries until now conducted PHCs in all the three census rounds If countries conduct censuses as planned in the 2010 round 34 countries would have completed their censuses in all the three rounds Quantum leap in terms of use of technology in the area of mapping, data capture and dissemination (UNSD has introduced CensusInfo for dissemination of census data)

5 African Centre for Statistics 5 Meetings and workshops held –6 th ASSD focused on PHCs with Analysis and Use in the 2010 Round of Population and Housing Census as the theme –Seminar on data archiving in Addis Ababa in September 2011 organized by UNSD in collaboration with ECA –Workshop on documentation, preservation and dissemination of census, survey and other micro-data ACS in collaboration with the University of Minnesota, USA, launched the African Integrated Census Microdata (AICMD) portal which currently holds more than 51 million person records from 12 countries Progress made

6 African Centre for Statistics Progress made Advisory services to six countries mainly in the area of census cartography Handbook on Census Planning and Enumeration Handbook on Data Sources and Estimation of Development of Indicators (Census and Surveys) Handbook on Engendering Statistical Processes (Census and Surveys) Handbooks on Census Data Capture, Data Editing and Data Tabulations - The last two have been finalized and will be available by end of June 2012

7 African Centre for Statistics Points for consideration Pan-African institutions make an assessment for the 2010 round of PHCs may be undertaken in 2013 covering various aspects such as the questions asked, the outputs generated and the processes followed in collection, processing and dissemination of data; A separate assessment may also be undertaken to type of technology and cartographic methods used at the different stages of PHCs in various countries; Continue advisory support through a panel of experts;

8 African Centre for Statistics Points for consideration Disseminate manuals and handbooks on PHCs already developed by UNECA and integrate them in the curricula of the Statistical Training Centres for greater out-reach; Continue to organize workshops and training seminars on various aspects of PHCs in partnership with other international agencies; and Countries may be encouraged to share their micro-data on to the AICMD portal for wider use of the researchers and policy makers.
