2. FSR/SOCIO- ECONOMICS UNIT FSR/SOCIO-ECONOMICS works in collaboration with other depts. This is due to the fact that economics cut across to all agric disciplines e.g. Pathology, Crop protection, Agronomy, Livestock.

3. SOCIO-ECONOMICS UNIT/FSR ROLE AND ACTIVITIES OF THE PROGRAM  The primary role of the program is to institutionalize, coordinate and develop an overall strategy framework for enhancing the efficiency and impact of agricultural research through farmer focused technologies. To achieve this, the program has major areas of research including;

4. Major Areas of Research  Promoting farmers participation in all stages of research  Monitoring and evaluation activities  Documenting dissemination and adoption of technologies  Preparing farm budgets

5. Areas of Research. Cont’  Providing information concerning the impact of technologies and return to research investment and analyzing institutional and policy- induced constraints to technology development at farm level.

6. Areas of Research. Cont’  Conducting baseline surveys  Project appraisals and evaluation  Profitability analysis  Value chains studies  Market research  Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA’s)

7. ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED 2000 – 2004 Through CBSD Project – cassava planting materials tolerant to CBSD were disseminated to farmers. Knowledge of farmers and extension officers on CBSD were improved through;

8. ACTIVITY (2000 – 2004) cont’ Training on symptoms of CBSD and control strategies. Radio programs on CBSD In collaboration with IITA, A pilot site for cassava post-harvest processing was established in Chisegu village – Masasi district.

ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED (2005 – 2008)  Conducted cashew stakeholders analysis  Conducted PRA for identification of farmers problems.  Conducted economic analysis of sesame production and marketing of small scale farmers in Southern zone.  Farm budgets for sesame, groundnuts, and cashew were prepared.

ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED (2009 -2010)  Farm budgets for maize, sesame, groundnuts and cashew were prepared.  Conducted Baseline survey for bambaranuts in Tanzania  Conducted bambara value chain in Tanzania  Conducted farmers’ preferences of improved cashew materials in Southern zone.  Conducted adoption and impact of sesame technologies to farmers of Southern Tanzania
