T EST T AKING S TRATEGIES Start with the rough draft of the essay (stories do NOT have to be read first) Use concrete details (no words such as things, something, someone, everyone, everybody, stuff, you, people, etc.) Be descriptive- think 5 senses Use stong verbs; avoid “to be” verbs IsAm AreWas WereBeen Have BeenHas Been

S TORIES AND Q UESTIONS Read questions for first story (MC and short answer), then read first story- highlight, underline, circle, look up unknown words, make notes in margin Answer questions for first story (MC and rough draft of short answer) Read questions for second story (Mc and short answer), then read second story- highlight, underline, circle, look up unknown words, make notes in margin Answer questions for second story (MC and rough draft of short answer)

S HORT A NSWERS Restate the question to answer the question- one complete sentence Include the names of the story(ies) and or characters Lead in for quote- The author states, the character says, The story explained… Give examples from text- one sentence, word for word, in “quotes” (will have two quotes for crossover short answer) So What? Explain…act as though the person you are talking to is quite ignorant

7. R EVISE AND EDIT Read Questions Use reading selection to answer questions. Read two sentences before and two sentences after to help with questions Try ALL the answers before deciding on final answer

8. I NFORMATIVE S ELECTION Look at all pictures Read all captions May have to make inferences to answer questions

9. F INAL C OPY OF E SSAY Go to rough draft of essay Re-read rough draft Make any necessary corrections or additions Check for details and specific examples Write final draft on answer document

10. C OMMON M ISTAKES !! Test too fast Don’t try/read all answer choices Don’t look up definitions Don’t complete short answers or skip them Don’t complete or answer prompt correctly or don’t do essay (this is automatic fail)
