9 What is NetBackup Appliance?
NetBackup with Intelligent Deduplication Veritas Storage Foundation Symantec Critical System Protection Built-in WAN Optimization 2 Product Series – 5000 Series and 5200 Series Both support dedupe at client or the media server Value built into the appliance What is NetBackup appliance? Is it just NetBackup pre-installed on hardware? The answer is both yes and no! You may ask why? Yes, NetBackup appliance is simply backup in a box if you are looking for a solution for your data protection and disaster recovery readiness. That is the business problem you are solving with this turnkey appliance that installs in minutes and reduce your operational costs. No, NetBackup appliance is more than a backup in box if you are comparing it with rolling your own hardware for NetBackup or if you are comparing it with third party deduplication appliances. Here is why I say this… NetBackup appliance comes with redundant storage in RAID6 for storing your backups Symantec worked with Intel to design the hardware for running NetBackup optimally for predictable and consistent performance. Eliminates the guesswork while designing the solution. Many vendors will talk about various processes running on their devices to perform integrity checks, some solutions even need blackout windows to do those operations. NetBackup appliances include Storage Foundation at no additional cost. The storage is managed by Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) and presented to operating system through Veritas File System. Why is this important? SF is industry-leading storage management infrastructure that powers the most mission-critical applications in the enterprise space. It is built for high-performance and resiliency. NetBackup appliance provides 24/7 protection with data integrity on storage provided by the industry leading technology. The Linux based operating system, optimized for NetBackup, harden by Symantec eliminates the cost of deploying and maintaining general purpose operating system and associated IT applications. NetBackup appliances include built-on WAN Optimization driver. Replicate to appliances on remote sites or to the cloud up to 10 times faster on across high latency links. Your backups need to be protected. Symantec Critical System Protection provides non-signature based Host Intrusion Prevention protection. It protects  against zero-day attacks using granular OS hardening policies along with application, user and device controls, all pre-defined for you in NetBackup appliance so that you don’t need to worry about configuring it. Best of all, reduce your operational expenditure and eliminate complexity! One patch updates everything in this stack! The most holistic data protection solution with the least number of knobs to operate. Symantec Hardened Operating System Optimized Hardware Redundant Storage Symantec™ NetBackup Appliances

12 International Healthcare Services Company
Customer Headquartered in San Francisco, international offices Challenges Struggling to meet Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) Managing multiple backup and recovery point products Selection Investigated IBM TSM, EMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker, and EMC Data Domain Solution Five (5) NetBackup 5220 – total of 188TB with capacity licensing Implemented Auto Image Replication (AIR) to automate DR Results Implemented solution in one (1) week Meeting (and testing) DR recovery time objectives Expanding NetBackup Appliances to support their vm environment -Pretty typical IT infrastructure with HQ in SFO and regional offices -Struggling to meet their recovery objectives – particually their DR testing windows. -Went with a new backup product that actually impacted their DR performance negatively. -Re-evaluated with TSM, Networker, Avamar and Data Domain -Ultimately selected NBU appliances because of THREE main considerations 1) Our capacity licensing model fit will with their data profile 2) The AIR (Automated Import Replication) capabilities made their DR testing easy to perform and greatly increased their DR performance 3) The ease of deployment delivered lower TCO. They are now looking at expanding their appliance footprint to cover the virutalization environment The client had recently migrated from one backup solution to another one but after implementation the client realized that the new backup vendor solution negatively impacted their ability to meet their defined Disaster Recovery Time Objectives. This required either additional components and complexity or leverage a holistic data protection solution that could meet all of their needs. The client investigated IBM TSM, EMC Networker, EMC Avamar, and EMC Data Domain. The client selected NetBackup Appliances and NetBackup Capacity Licensing. Their decision was based upon the business advantage of Auto Image Replication (A.I.R.) to automate DR and the ease of the NetBackup Appliances from initial setup to ongoing management. The client was able to implement the entire environment in less than one week and begin testing for DR in less than two weeks. They were able to meet a great majority of the DR requirements in their first attempt. They are now looking to expand the use of the NetBackup Appliances into their VM data protection needs. 13 National Engineering Company
Customer Primary offices NY & LA with 13 remote offices Challenges Eliminate tape-based backups Efficiently replicate backup data from remote offices across the WAN Improve recovery objectives; physical and virtual environments Selection Integrated appliance supporting remote and primary offices Need to enhance disaster recovery Considered both Symantec and EMC Avamar Solution Two (2) NetBackup TB appliances with deduplication Results Greater data protection and SLAs Improved local and disaster recovery Operation efficiency of remote staff and less tape A second example is a pain point we see a lot – Customers looking to eliminate or greatly reduce the tape footprint in their environment through consolidation With a number of remote offices, effective replication was a key consideration. The combination of AIR and WAN acceleration was a winning combination for their environment. The result? -They were able to reduce their remote site backups by 75% -- From 8 hrs to 2 hrs -They were able to cut the backup of the backup of their virtual envrironment in half due to the V-Ray technoolgy -They are now seeing 100% backup success rates vs the 70% they had previously -Their RTO increased by a factor of 4 -Reduced their tape usage by 90% And in terms of operational savings.. This customer performed their own analysis and determined that their appliance deployment reclaimed over 3,000 hours a year reclaimed for non-IT employees Shrinking Remote Site Backup Times by 75 Percent While Achieving 100 Percent Payback with Symantec Solutions Customer National engineering services company 500+ employees HQ in New York with 13 worldwide offices Challenges Move away from tape-based backups Efficiently replicate backup data from remote offices across the WAN Improve recovery objectives; physical and virtual environments Selection Deduplication improves backup efficiency Appliances enable fast restores of business-critical data Automated image replication enhances disaster recovery Solution Two (2) NetBackup TB appliances Symantec NetBackup™ with NetBackup Auto Image Replication (AIR) NetBackup Deduplication NetBackup Microsoft SQL Server Agent NetBackup VMware Protection Results Data Protection 75% reduction in backup time for remote sites (2 hrs or less vs. 8 hrs) Mid-90% deduplication rates for daily incremental backups 100% backup success rate (vs. 70% previously at remote offices) 2x faster backup of VMware environment with V-Ray technology (one pass vs. two) Local and Disaster Recovery 100% recovery success rate (vs. 80% previously) Able to respond to restore requests from users in hours instead of days 90 days of backups retained locally on disk for fast recovery Fourfold faster recovery time objective (RTO) Operational Efficiency 80-90% reduction in tape usage, generating 100% payback in X months 3,000+ hours a year reclaimed for non-IT employees Symantec™ NetBackup Appliances
