Reflections Using art to teach history was a multifaceted lesson that involved a variety of different resources and projects used to teach the Civil Rights Movement. The overall goal for the lesson was to create activities that allowed students to learn about the Civil Rights Movement through various pieces of art. Louisiana played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement therefore this lesson was well suited for a Louisiana History class.

Reflections As a middle school social studies teacher, this lesson has opened a whole new and exciting door for my students as they learn about civil rights. As visual leaners, art is a medium that many of my students already have an interest in. I have incorporated artwork into our lessons on the Civil Rights Movement bringing events of the Movement to life for my students.

Reflections I selected this podcast because of the insight it provided about the artwork. The student showed a deep understanding of the artwork when she created her poem. Her unique approach to her poem was both creative and thought provoking.

Impact I have learned a great deal from this project. I have learned how to incorporate art into my lessons and how valuable it is to allow students to be creative without a great deal of specific requirement placed on their work.

Impact My students learned how to evaluate art and use their own creativity to learn. They learned about the Civil Rights Movement through various pieces of art and were able to connect the past to the present by creating unique collages.
